UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Nittany Lion men’s and women’s fencing teams competed at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday in Waltham, Mass. The Penn State men posted a 5-1 overall mark, and the Penn State women went 5-3.
Penn State began the day against Yale, The Nittany Lion men lost 15-12. Penn State took the epee competition 6-3 but dropped foil 7-2 and saber 5-4. The women also lost 15-12. Penn State won saber 5-4 but lost the foil rounds 5-4 and fell 6-3 in epee.
The Penn State men beat Brandeis 15-12 in the second round and the women won 18-9 The men took saber 5-4 and epee 6-3 against Brandeis but lost 5-4 in the foil. The Lions dropped Saber 5-4 but dominated both foil and epee by 7-2 scores.
Penn State took on Lawrence in round three. The men won 15-12, winning foil 6-3 and epee 5-4 while losing saber 5-4. The women won 19-8 over Lawrence, taking all three weapons. Penn State won saber 5-4, foil 8-1 and epee 6-3.
The Nittany Lion women took on Tufts in the fourth round. Penn State won 17-10, winning saber and foil 7-2 but dropping epee 6-3.
Penn State battled Boston College in round five. The men won a close 14-13 dual. Penn State took epee 6-3 but fell in saber and foil by 5-4 scores. The women dropped a 16-11 dual. Penn State won the foil 5-4 but fell in saber 5-4 and epee 7-2.
The Penn State women’ took on Wellesley in round six and lost 16-11. The Nittany Lions lost all three weapons, foil 5-4, saber 56-4 and epee 6-3.
Penn State took on St. Johns in the seventh round. The men won a close 14-13 dual, winning saber 6-3 and losing epee and foil by 5-4 scores. The women won 15-12, grabbing 6-3 victories in saber and foil but falling in epee 6-3.
The day concluded with a match-up against Drew. The Penn State men rolled 25-2, winning all three weapons. The Lions won saber 9-0, foil 8-1 and epee 8-1. The women also dominated Drew, grabbing a 22-5 victory. The ladies won all three weapons as well, saber 7-2, foil 9-0 and epee 6-3.
Penn State continues action in the new year with select fencers heading to Kansas City, Mo. For the NAC event on Jan. 3.
