UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's and women's fencing teams competed Sunday at the Philadelphia Invitational in Philadelphia. The Nittany Lion men’s team went 4-1 and Nittany Lion women’s team went 3-2.
Penn State vs. Princeton- In the match against Princeton, Penn State's men’s team posted a win in foil (5-4) but fell in epee (8-1) and saber (5-4) dropping the dual 17-10. The women's team put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell to Princeton with a final score of 17-10. Winning in saber (6-3) but falling in foil (5-4) and epee (9-0)
Penn State vs. Wagner- In the match against Wagner, the men’s team showcased their prowess in their 16-11 win by dominating in foil (6-3), saber (5-4), and epee (5-4). The women's team also triumphed over Wagner 17-10, winning in foil (8-1), and saber (5-4) but falling in epee (5-4)
Penn State vs. NJIT- Penn State notched a commanding win against NJIT. The men’s team rolled to a 21-6 win as it dominated in epee (8-1), saber (6-3), and foil (7-2). The women's fencing team delivered a great performance against NJIT with strong wins in foil (8-1), epee (8-1), and saber (9-0).
Penn State vs Duke- The men’s team rolled to a 16-11 win as it dominated in foil (7-2), epee (5-4), but dropped a close dual in saber (5-4). Despite their efforts, Penn State's women's team narrowly lost their dual against Duke, with a final score of 16-11. They scored a close win in epee (5-4) but fell in foil (7-2) and saber 5-4)
Penn State vs Lafayette- In their match against Layfette the men’s team exhibited their strengths in a 21-6 win. They had a clean sweep in saber (9-0), dominated in foil (7-2), and won a close dual in epee (5-4). The women’s team did not compete in this dual.
Penn State vs FDU- In their match against FDU the women’s team had an impressive performance. They had shutouts in both foil (9-0) and saber (9-0) and won a close dual in epee (5-4) resulting in their 22-5 win. The men’s team did not compete in this dual.
Following this weekend’s action, Penn State Fencing hosts Penn, Temple, North Carolina, Columbia, Harvard, Duke and Yale at the Multi-Sport Facility with action beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
