Penn State Soars in Night One of Doubleheader

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa - The Blue and White welcomed the Army Black Knights for the first of two matchups in their final homestand of the season. The Nittany Lions had a dominant start to the competition with six consecutive first-place finishes, creating a lead that withheld the duration of the matchup as Penn State earned their first win of the new year, a 171.5-128.5.

Top Swims

The day kicked off with a dominant run in the men’s 1000 Free as the freshman duo in Rylan Anselm and Jack Clancy tallied first and third place finishes. Anselm added another gold and career best time to his collection with a 9:09.21 finish, followed by Clancy in third with a 9:22.36.

Junior Eduardo Cisternas added another victory for the Blue and White, touching first and swimming for a career-best time of 1:35.93 in the 200 Free.

Cisternas touched first in the 500 Free with a 4:23.53, followed by Anselm in second with a 4:29.03.

Penn State added a 2-3-4 finish in the 100 Back with efforts from Matthew Bittner who finished second, Cooper Morley in third, and Jack Harvey in fourth. Harvey added a second place finish in the 200 Back with a 1:45.27.

Mariano Lazzerini and Filipe Pinheiro touched second and third in the 100 Breast competition, Lazzerini with a 52.98 and Pinheiro with a 53.49. Lazzerini added a first place finish in the 200 Breast with a 1:55.42. 

Alex Karahalis had another record outing in the 200 Fly, with a 1:44.85, seconds short of a personal record. 

Tylor Kim and Ben Musante touched second and fourth in the 50 Free, with respective times of 20.23 and 20.90.

Kim added a first place finish in the 100 Free with a 43.10, followed by Toni Slavica in third with a 44.88. 

Senior Victor Bagahna touched first in the 100 Fly with a 46.56, followed by Matthew Bittner in second with a 46.90. 

Relays

The 200 Medley relay team prevailed again earning another victory, courtesy of Cooper Morley, Mariano Lazzerini, Victor Bagahna and Tylor Kim, the quad posted a swift 1:25.30.

The Blue and White closed the day with a victorious 1:19.67  finish in the 200 Free relay, with contributions from Morley, Bagahna, Bittner and Kim. 

Divers

Hayden Elliott swept both competitions on the day, finishing first in the one meter with a 315.68, and in the three meter with a 363.98. 

Danny Mcgaughey added a close third in each, with a 255.45 in the one meter and a 276.7 in the three.
