Kling homers, Shenosky works five solid innings

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team fell 9-2 against Pitt on Tuesday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The game was even at 2-2 going into the seventh, but the Panthers broke through with five runs in the frame. Penn State is now 16-8 on the year, while Pitt moved to 15-9.

 

On PSU’s third Dollar Dog Night of the year, 2,822 PSU fans consumed 6,733 hot dogs.

 

Skip Shenosky made his fourth start of the year for the Nittany Lions, working five innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out four. He tossed 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth.

 

Riley Weatherwax went one-third of an inning with a strikeout. Ben DeMell worked one inning and was charged with two runs on two hits, while posting two strikeouts. Anthony Steele allowed three runs over two-thirds of an inning. Harrison Lollin threw one inning, giving up two runs. Sean Williams and Will Andrews worked to close out the ninth.

 

Antonio Doganiero got the start for Pitt, going four innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits. He tallied two strikeouts and a walk. Aidan Coleman picked up the win, going five shutout innings in relief. He recorded five strikeouts and allowed one hit and three walks.

 

Penn State collected two runs on six hits. Paxton Kling blasted his 10th homer of the year, a solo shot in the first inning. Ryan Weingartner added an RBI single, while Joey DeMucci had a base knock and a run.

 

Pitt notched nine runs on 11 hits. Ryan Zuckerman had five RBI, including a two-run double and a two-run homer. Sebastian Pisacreta tallied two hits, including a two-run homer.

 

The Panthers got on the board in the first. Luke Cantwell and Jayden Melendez worked back-to-back walks. Cantwell moved up to third on a flyout to center and scored on Zuckerman’s sac fly to right. Pitt led 1-0.

 

Penn State tied the game in the bottom half. With one out, Kling lifted a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right. The 354-foot solo homer evened the game at 1-1.

 

Pitt added a run in the second. Pisacreta led off the inning with a double off the wall in right. Two batters later, Logan Duffy sent a single through the middle to drive in Pisacreta. Pitt led 2-1.

 

The Nittany Lions re-tied the game in the bottom of the second. With one out, Jesse Jaconski chopped a grounder to the mound and reached on an error. A single to center by DeMucci put runners on first and second. A fielder’s choice resulted in DeMucci on second and Cohl Mercado on first. Weingartner ripped a single to left to bring in DeMucci and even the game at 2-2.

 

The Panthers re-took the lead in the seventh. With one out, Cantwell lined a double to the left-center gap. Melendez worked a walk. Two batters later, Zuckerman doubled off the wall in left to bring in Cantwell and Melendez. Caden Dulin followed with a double to the right-center gap to drive in Zuckerman. A fly ball by Pisacreta went over the wall in left-center for a two-run homer. Pitt held a 7-2 lead.

 

Pitt added two runs in the ninth. After a walk by Nessler, Zuckerman blasted a fly ball over the fence in left-center. The Panthers led 9-2.

 

Penn State continues Big Ten play next weekend at Michigan. Friday’s matchup is set for a 4 p.m. first pitch, followed by 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
