Baseball’s Comeback Falls Short In Series Finale Against Xavier

Nittany Lions rally for three in the ninth

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team rallied for three runs in the ninth but fell 8-6 against Xavier on Saturday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Matt Maloney continued a strong senior weekend with a homer. Penn State finished the regular season with a 31-22 record, while Xavier improved to 31-25.

Prior to the game, Penn State honored 12 seniors on Senior Day: Will Andrews, Derek Cease, Ben DeMell, Joe Jaconski, Maloney, Zach Mizrahi, Chase Renner, Frankie Sanchez, Anthony Steele, Connor Throneberry, Cole Wagner and Brandon Wingenroth.

 

Mason Butash earned the start for the Nittany Lions, working 3.2 innings. He gave up two runs on one hit and three walks. Butash recorded one strikeout.

 

Skip Shenosky threw 2.1 innings and was charged with three runs on four hits. He tallied one strikeout and one walk. Harrison Lollin went one inning, giving up two hits and a walk. Carson Renner threw one-third of an inning and gave up a run. Brandon Wingenroth went 1.1 frames, allowing two runs on three hits. Connor Throneberry finished the ninth.

 

Logan Schmidt got the start for Xavier, going three innings. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk. Schmidt tallied four strikeouts. Jack Nobe threw 2.2 frames, giving up two runs on four hits. Trevor Geddes tossed two-thirds of an inning without allowing a run. Jon Wylie threw 1.2 frames, giving up three runs on two hits. Jake Hooker allowed two hits in one inning of work.

 

Penn State scored six runs on 12 hits. Maloney launched a solo homer and added an RBI double. Nate Voss contributed three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Ryan Weingartner collected two hits, two walks and an RBI.

 

With two walks on Saturday, Weingartner now has 43 on the season, moving into a tie for fourth at PSU with Joe Jaconski (43; 2024). On the day, Weingartner passed Thomas Bramley (41; 2023).

 

Xavier had eight runs on 11 hits. Nolan Tucker tallied four hits, including two doubles, and three RBI. Aedan Anderson had a two-run homer and three runs.

 

The Nittany Lions got on the board in the second. Weingartner held off on a 3-2 pitch for a leadoff walk. Voss dropped a single into left to put runners on first and second. Maloney sent a line drive down the third base line and into the corner for a double to bring in Weingartner. PSU held a 1-0 lead.

 

Xavier plated a pair of runs in the third. With one out, Luke Hammond and Jake Lambdin worked back-to-back walks. Tucker lined a double to right-center to bring in Hammond. Carter Hendrickson lifted a sac fly to center to drive in Lambdin. The Musketeers led 2-1.

 

Penn State tied the game in the fourth. With two outs, Maloney launched a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right. Maloney’s solo homer evened the game at 2-2.

 

The Nittany Lions re-took the lead in the sixth. Bryce Molinaro smacked a double off the wall in center. With two outs, Voss lined a double to left to bring in Molinaro. PSU claimed a 3-2 lead.

 

The Musketeers answered with three runs in the seventh. Anderson worked a leadoff walk before Jason Jelic singled to right to put runners on the corners. Luke Hammond sent a single through the left side to bring in Anderson. Jake Lambdin reached on a fielder’s choice, resulting in Jelic at third and Hammond out at second. A double to the right-center gap by Tucker brought home Jelic. Two batters later, Connor Misch chopped an infield single, allowing Lambdin to score. Xavier led 5-3.

 

Xavier added a run in the eighth. Anderson and Jelic drew back-to-back walks to begin the frame. After the runners advanced on a wild pitch, Lambdin worked a walk to load the bases. A grounder to the left side by Tucker resulted in an infield single and Anderson crossing the plate. The Musketeers held a 6-3 lead.

 

The Musketeers plated two runs in the ninth. With two outs, Isaac Wachsmann singled to left. Anderson lifted a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left for a two-run homer. Xavier extended its lead to 8-3.

 

Next week, the Nittany Lions travel to the Big Ten Tournament Presented by IFS.ai. Penn State’s game dates, times and opponents are to be determined. The tournament runs from Tuesday, May 20 to Sunday, May 25 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
