DiMarsico and Wiebusch Added to U.S. Collegiate Selects Team for the 2025 Spengler Cup

Nittany Lions now represent five of the 16 roster spots announced as DiMarsico and Wiebusch join Cerrato, Fink and Gadowsky.

DAVOS, Switzerland – Penn State junior Matt DiMarsico (Wexford, Pa.) and sophomore JJ Wiebusch (Verona, Wis.) were announced as part of six players added to the United States Collegiate Selects Team ahead of the 2025 Spengler Cup as announced by College Hockey Inc. earlier Thursday afternoon.

DiMarsico and Wiebusch join linemate Charlie Cerrato (Fallston, Md.) who was added to the roster a few weeks back, along with junior classmates Aiden Fink (Calgary, Alberta) and Mac Gadowsky (State College, Pa.), who were both named as part of the First Five last week as returning All-Americans.

All returning First and Second Team AHCA/CCM All-Americans received an automatic invitation to the team. The remainder of the roster, which will include representation from all six conferences, will be constructed by the USCS coaching staff and organizing committee, with guidance from select NHL scouts.

Along with DiMarsico and Wiebusch, Northeastern defensemen Vinny Borgesi, Minnesota-Duluth goaltender Adam Gajan, Cornell forward Ryan Walsh and Wisconsin forward Quinn Finley were each added bringing the current roster to 16 players with more being invited and announced in the coming weeks.

It was announced back in August that Nittany Lion Bench Boss Guy Gadowsky will serve as the USCS Head Coach this winter in Davos.

For the first time in the 102-year history of the tournament, which dates back to 1923 making it the oldest invitational ice hockey tournament in the world, a team of top NCAA collegiate players will compete, led by Gadowsky.

DiMarsico has eight goals and seven assists for 15 points through the first 10 games this season ranking tied for third in the Big Ten and sixth in the nation for points while his goal total is good for third in the Big Ten and tied for fifth nationally.

Wiebusch leads the nation with 11 goals while his 18 points are tied for second nationally and tops in the Big Ten with Cerrato. The sophomore is also tied for the national lead with six powerplay goals and three game-winning tallies to his credit through 10 games this season.  

Wiebusch has registered at least one point in nine of 10 games this season with goals in eight of those games including five-straight to tie his career-long goal streak set last season. Dating back to last season, Wiebusch has now scored at least one goal in 15 of his last 19 games with an eye-popping stat line of 20 goals and 12 assists for 32 points in his last 19 games played.

The United States Collegiate Selects will face Team Canada to open play Spengler Cup play on December 26. Each team will play a minimum of three contests and maximum of five during the six-day event.

The tournament is being broadcast to over 20 countries, either through a partner or via livestream. Official word on how the games can be seen in the United States will be announced at a later date.

The U.S. Collegiate Select team will be made up of 25 student-athletes from across NCAA men’s ice hockey, with each conference being represented. The competition runs from December 26-31, with the six participating teams. Along with the Selects, host HC Davos, Team Canada, HC Fribourg-Gotteron, Sparta Praha and IFK Helsinki will be taking part in the 2025 edition.
