Recognized for more than 20 years of service to Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, Jonathan Salazer begins his 24th season at University Park and 20th with the Nittany Lion basketball program as the team’s athletic trainer.
Salazer works collaboratively with both the sports performance and sports medicine staff to provide day-to-day and preventive care for the overall well-being and safety of Penn State student-athletes. He works directly with the team physicians in providing diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation services.
His knowledge and expertise has been paramount in the program’s response and approach to individual and team workout, practices and preparation for the Men’s Basketball season.
In addition to his primary responsibility of working with the men’s basketball program, Salazer also oversees athletic training services for six other varsity programs and the supervision of four athletic facilities. He shares his knowledge and experiences as a mentor with students and dozens of Penn State alumni who have graduated from the program. Salazer, a 1993 Penn State graduate, was promoted to associate director of athletic training in 2012.
While a student at Penn State, Salazer was a member of the Health and Human Development Honor Society, and a two-time recipient of the Sayers J. “Bud” Miller Award, for most outstanding athletic training student. After completing his course work at Penn State, he was certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association in January of 1994. He earned a master’s degree in Physical Education from West Virginia University in 1995, where he worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for a variety of teams.
Following graduation from West Virginia, Salazer moved to Philadelphia and worked for a season as an intern athletic trainer with the Philadelphia Eagles. In the fall of 1996, Salazer returned to college athletics, working with the football and basketball teams at Lehigh University.
The following year, he returned to his alma mater to work with the Nittany Lion football team. Salazer moved across the street to the Bryce Jordan Center in 2001 and began working with the men’s basketball and baseball teams. In 2005, he received the Coach’s Award from the men’s basketball team in recognition of his contributions to the program.
Salazer is a member of several athletic training associations, a certified strength and conditioning specialist and an approved clinical instructor in athletic training. He is a volunteer for several organizations including Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer, State College Warriors Lacrosse Board member and coach and creator of Growing the Game summer basketball program.
