Since arriving in State College in August 2024, Nelson has helped drive measurable competitive success. During the 2025 season, Penn State Softball set single-season program records in batting average, home runs, RBIs, runs scored, and total bases while producing four All-Conference Big Ten and NFCA All-Region selections. In Swimming, his work has supported 20 NCAA B-Cuts, three Big Ten first-place finishes, a school record in the 200 IM, and numerous personal-best performances.
Nelson integrates force plate technology, jump readiness testing, and perceived exertion monitoring into a structured athlete management system designed to optimize performance, manage workload, and improve athlete availability. He serves on the department’s Return-to-Play subcommittee and has developed athletic performance guidelines for shoulder, elbow, and hand injuries. His coaching philosophy is grounded in motor learning principles, ecological dynamics, and the constraints-led approach, emphasizing adaptable skill expression and resilient performance under competitive stress.
Prior to Penn State, Nelson served as Associate Director of Sports Performance at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, overseeing Women’s Volleyball, Baseball, Women’s Basketball, and Track & Field. His programs contributed to conference championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, program-best finishes, and 28 combined All-Conference selections while implementing a comprehensive load monitoring system integrating wellness questionnaires, countermovement jump testing, and RPE tracking.
Nelson previously served as Interim Director of Strength and Conditioning at Wofford College, overseeing multiple Division I programs including Football and Baseball. During his tenure, Baseball captured the Southern Conference Regular Season Championship, and achieved a national ranking of No. 25, and recorded the most wins in program history. He was named the 2021–2022 Athletics Support Staff Member of the Year.
He began his full-time collegiate career as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Saint Francis University, directly overseeing Olympic sport programs and assisting with Football and Women’s Basketball. Nelson integrated velocity-based training and heart rate monitoring to refine sport-specific conditioning models.
Earlier in his career, Nelson served within the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, developing strength and conditioning programs for 24 Tier 1 AAA teams and assisting with the NHL roster. His work supported two USA Hockey National Championship teams and included the creation of an athlete monitoring system centered on sleep, nutrition, hydration, and perceived exertion.
At IMG Academy, he directed performance programming for Men’s Tennis and assisted with Baseball, Soccer, and Football, collaborating closely with sports medicine staff to guide athletes from pre-surgery through full return-to-play while integrating force plate analysis, GPS tracking, and velocity-based training technologies.
Nelson began his Division I career as a Strength and Conditioning Intern at University of Pittsburgh, assisting with Olympic sport programs and gaining foundational experience in interdisciplinary performance preparation.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Nelson is an active contributor to the professional performance community. He has been a featured guest on the Coach Your Brains Out podcast, the Braun Performance and Rehab Podcast, the The Adaptable Athlete Podcast, and Talkin’ Pitt, where he has discussed skill acquisition, motor learning, and problem-solving in modern athletic development. He is also the creator and host of the Hot Takes Performance Podcast.
