Messina is in her 29th year at Penn State and her 3rd year as the Assistant Athletic Director of Athletic Training Services. She is charged with overseeing the athletic training staff and athletic training services for approximately 900 student-athletes across 31 varsity programs and rugby, cheer and dance. Messina is also responsible for developing athletic training strategies and implementing policies and protocols that ensure compliance with NCAA and Big Ten Conference rules and regulations to ensure the health and safety of all Penn State student athletes.
Messina is a member of the Nittany Lions’ Sport Performance Leadership Team comprised of the leaders in Sports Medicine, Athletic Training, Performance Enhancement, Performance Nutrition, Performance Psychology, Student-Athlete Welfare and Development and Applied Health and Performance Science. Messina also serves on the Drug and Alcohol Testing and Education Committee and the Mental Health Committee.
Messina is a 1990 graduate of Penn State where she received her Bachelor of Science in Health Education. She then went on to earn her Master’s degree at East Stroudsburg University before being hired at Penn State in September 1992.
Messina spent 14 years as an Assistant Athletic Trainer providing comprehensive athletic training services and medical care to numerous teams, including the Penn State Men’s Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams.
Messina was the Clinical Coordinator of the Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program from 2006-2013. She was an instructor for various Kinesiology classes and was responsible for overseeing the clinical placement of 50-70 athletic training students each year in the academic program.
In 2013 Messina returned to Intercollegiate Athletics to became an Associate Director of Athletic Training Services, providing medical care once again for Penn State Field Hockey and Women’s Lacrosse and supervising a staff of 10 athletic trainers responsible for providing services to Men’s Lacrosse, Swimming and Diving, Tennis, Ice Hockey and Rugby. She held this position for 5 years before being promoted to her current position.
Messina is a member of several athletic training professional organizations, is a preceptor for the athletic training education program and is an American Red Cross CPR instructor. She is Graston M1 and M2 certified, is a Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation Specialist -Owens Recovery and has been trained in various manual therapy techniques.
Messina, originally from the Johnstown area, resides in State College with her husband, Patrick and their children, Isabella and Jack.
