Penn State Women's Tennis Concludes Challenging First Day at the Furman Fall Classic

Greenville, S.C. - The Penn State women's tennis team opened its fall schedule today against tough opponents on the first day of the Furman Fall Classic. The tournament continues tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center and concludes on Sunday.

Sophomore Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight 6 singles bracket after a hard fought victory over USC's Megan McGavock. Holzberg dropped the first set by a 6-4 margin but quickly bounced back with a pair of 6-2 wins in the second and third sets.

"I'm really proud of Holzberg," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "She was disciplined and she stuck to the gameplan. She showed her willingness and maturity on the court today."

In other singles play, junior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) fell to USC's Gira Schofield (6-2, 6-2) and senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) lost to USC's Ana Zubori (6-3, 6-3). Sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) came up short against Vanderbilt's Taka Bertrand (6-4, 6-1) and freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) fell to Tennessee's Zsophia Zubor (6-2, 6-0). Junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Vanderbilt's Courtney Ulery and sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) fell to Vanderbilt's Katie Kilborn (6-2, 6-1).

In doubles play, Shular and Lotto defeated Furman's Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojlovic in the first round, but would fall to Clemson's Ani Mijacika and Federica van Andrichem, 8-1 in the semifinals. Morzan and McCarthy lost to Wisconsin's Morgan Tuttle and Chelsea Nusslock, 8-4, in the first round, and fell to Connor Vogel and Jennifer Meredith of Tennessee in the consolation bracket (8-2).

Also in doubles play, Dohanics and Holzberg lost a tough first round match to USC's Megan McGavock and Mikki Jocic (8-6). They also fell in the consolation bracket to Vanderbilt's Caroline Ferrell and Courtney Ulery (8-4).
