Evanston, Ill.; - The Penn State women's tennis team (1-5) began Big Ten play today against the No. 2 Wildcats of Northwestern (7-1). The Nittany Lions knew the competition would be tough as the Wildcats were fired up to play after their first loss of the season to Georgia Tech at the ITA Indoor Championship Final. In the end, Penn State fell to Northwestern, 7-0.
In doubles, sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) dropped an 8-3 decision to #7 Lauren Lui and Samantha Murray. Sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) fell to Georgia Rose and Alexis Conill, 8-2. Senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) paired with junior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) but were beaten by Maria Mosolova and Nazlie Ghazal, 8-5.
In singles action, BeVard fell to #2 Mosolova (6-0, 6-0), while Shular dropped a tough match to #9 Rose (6-1, 6-0). Holzberg put in a hard fight against #20 Murray winning the first set 6-4, before falling 7-5 in the second and dropping the tiebreaker, 10-7. Junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) fell to #68 Lui (6-2, 6-0) and McCarthy fell to #99 Ghazal (6-1, 6-4). Freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) fell to Suzie Matzerauer in a pair of 6-1 sets.
Tomorrow the Nittany Lions will face their sixth ranked opponent in a row when they take on the No. 74 Badgers of Wisconsin. Action begins at 11 a.m. Following tomorrow's matchup, the Penn State women's tennis team will have the week off before hosting West Virginia, Friday, Feb. 29 at 5 p.m.
