Madison, Wis.; - The Penn State women's tennis team (2-5, 1-1) opened up Big Ten play today with a 4-3 win over No. 74 Wisconsin (3-6, 0-1). The Nittany Lions earned four singles and one doubles win as they topped the Badgers.
In doubles, sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Easton, Conn.) and junior Lauren Holzberg (Danbury, Conn.) topped Wisconsin's Morgan Tuttle and Chelsea Nusslock, 8-5. Jessica Seyferth and Elizabeth Carpenter defeated sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) in a tough battle, 9-7. Securing the doubles point for the Badgers was Erin Jobe and Katya Mirnova who defeated senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and junior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia), 8-1.
The Nittany Lions had to win four singles matches to secure a win over the Badgers, and win they did. Holzberg defeated Seyferth (6-4, 6-2), Dohanics topped Mirnova (6-2, 6-3), McCarthy took down Tuttle in a three-set battle (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) and freshman Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) topped Nusslock (6-3, 7-5). Falling in singles were BeVard and Shular. BeVard fell to Carpenter (7-5, 6-1) and Shular fell to Emese Kardhordo (6-2, 6-3).
"I am very proud of our team," said head coach Dawna Prevette." "We fought hard out there and were very determined."
The Nittany Lions will return home and have the next two weeks to prepare for West Virginia and Columbia. Action begins Friday, Feb. 29 at 5 p.m. against the Mountaineers. Admission is free.
