Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Penn State men's swimming and diving team wrapped up its regular season on Saturday by competing at the second day of the two-day, four-team meet hosted by Michigan. After trailing in all three of its duals following Friday night, the Nittany Lions remained behind on the second day and fell in all three of its duals to finish the regular season with an 8-4 mark in duals. Penn State narrowly fell to Northwestern by a 183-150 score while Michigan topped PSU 245-87 and Ohio State also won by a 254.5-79.5 score.
Once again, it was Pat Schirk that led the way for the Nittany Lions with the best finish of the day for Penn State. After finishing second in the 200 backstroke last night, he added a second place finish in the 100 back on Saturday as he came in just .19 of a second behind the first place finisher in :49.52.
The 200 medley relay team of Schirk, Kyle Miranda, Basil Kaaki and Sean Swanepoel was the next best finisher for Penn State as it finished fourth in 1:31.75. Swanepoel added a fifth place finish in the 100 freestyle, coming in at :46.20. The 800 free relay team of Schirk, Ben Ryan, Swanepoel and Sean Biedermann placed sixth in 6:53.55. On the three-meter springboard diving, Josh Bonner finished sixth with a score of 296.00.
Other top finishers for the Nittany Lions on Saturday were Dito Calderon, who finished ninth in the 500 free in 4:34.72, Biedermann in the 200 IM (10th), Kaaki in the 100 butterfly (8th), and Miranda in the 100 breaststroke (7th).
Penn State's next competition will be in the same pool as this weekend's meet as this year's Big Ten Championships will also be held at Michigan, February 28-March 1.
