Wichita, Kan.; - Penn State women's tennis (6-5, 1-1) faced their second and final opponent today of their spring break trip. After an exciting win over Oklahoma State, the Nittany Lions fell to No. 69 Wichita State ending their four-game win streak.
In doubles action, sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) fell to Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira, 8-1. Senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) paired with junior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) but the two were defeated by Anna Egorova and Lenore Lazaroiu, 8-5. Junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) fell to Florentine Hanisch and Torrie Browning, 8-5.
Earning wins in singles for Penn State were the seniors, Shular and BeVard. BeVard defeated Egorova in a three-set match (2-6, 6-2, 7-5), and Shular defeated Hanisch (6-4, 6-3). Falling in singles was Holzberg who was defeated by Dalmacio (6-3, 6-3). Lotto was defeated by Lazaroiu (6-4, 6-3), while junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) fell to Torrie Browning (4-6, 6-0, 6-3). McCarthy put up a tough fight but fell to Ferreira (6-3, 7-5).
The Nittany Lions return home next week to take on the Temple Owls March 21 and St. John's March 23. Action begins Friday at 5 p.m. at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center and admission is free.
