Penn State ended the tournament with 75.0 points, good enough for third place. The Nittany Lions finished only four points behind Ohio State (79.0). Iowa claimed the team title with 117.5 points. The third place finish is the highest for Penn State since finishing in third in 1994. The 75.0 team points is the fifth most in school history. Penn State posted a superb 25-10 overall record in the tournament as well.

NITTANY LIONS TAKE THIRD PLACE TROPHY AT 2008 NCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS With seven qualifiers contributing to a 75.00 team point total, the Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team placed third at the 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis' Scottrade Center. The third place finish is Penn State's highest since 1994, the highest for head coach Troy Sunderland and only the ninth top three finish for Penn State since it won the National Championship in 1953. Penn State's 75.0 team points is the fifth highest team total in Lion history. Penn State came home with four All-Americans, the most since 2003. Senior Phil Davis' national title at 197 was the 21st in Penn State history and Davis is the 18th Nittany Lion to win a crown. Penn State's seven qualifiers posted a 25-10 record.

He ends sophomore season as PSU's leader in wins with a 32-3 overall record.

DAVIS CLAIMS BIG TEN TITLE AT 197; FOURTH MULTIPLE BIG TEN TITLE WINNER AT PSU Three-time All-American Phil Davis downed Northwestern's Mike Tamillow in a 3-2 decision to claim the Big Ten crown. The win gave Davis his second Big Ten championship, making him only the fourth wrestler in Penn State's somewhat short Big Ten history to win more than one conference crown. He joins Eric Bradley, who won titles in 2004 and 2005; Kerry McCoy, who won in 1994, 1995 and 1997; and Sanshiro Abe, who won in 1993, 1994 and 1996. His victory gave Penn State its 19th Big Ten Champion among 13 different wrestlers.

NITTANY LIONS QUALIFY HIGH NUMBER AGAIN Penn State took seven wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row and continue a string of seven or more qualifiers that dates back to the 2006 season. In the nation's toughest wrestling conference, Penn State continued to take a large contingent to the `Big Show' every year. In Penn State's 16 years of wrestling in the Big Ten (including this season), the Nittany Lions have only taken less than six grapplers to nationals one time. Penn State has taken 10 twice, nine twice, eight twice, seven four times (including this year) and six five times. The lone low total was a four-person group in 1995. That group, however, placed fifth nationally and crowned a champion (John Hughes at 142), a runner-up (Sanshiro Abe at 126) and a third place winner (Kerry McCoy at HWT).
