University Park, Pa.; - The Penn State women's tennis team (7-9, 1-4) fell to Purdue today in what would have been a chance for them to make history. The Nittany Lions, who have not defeated Purdue since 1994, fell 4-3 to the Boilermakers leaving the chance to make history for another day.
Senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.) and junior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came out on top for Penn State in doubles. The pair defeated Purdue's Alejandra Boeker and Whitney Reys, 8-3. In other doubles action, sophomore Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) had a tough loss to Brooke Beier and Stephanie Wooten, falling 8-5. Securing the doubles point for the Boilermakers was Cigdem Duru and Joanna Craven who defeated junior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, B.C.) and junior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.), 9-7.
Junior Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.), McCarthy and Morzan earned the singles wins for the Nittany Lions but three wins were not enough to take down the Boilermakers. Holzberg had a three-set win over Cigdem Duru (1-6, 6-3, 6-3), McCarthy defeated Anna Dzeva 6-2, 6-3, and Morzan took down Boeker 6-1, 6-3. Falling in singles were BeVard who fell to Beier in straight sets (6-4, 6-4), Shular who was defeated by Wooten (7-5, 6-3) and Dohanics who fell to Craven (6-2, 6-3).
The Nittany Lions will be back in action tomorrow facing the No. 62 Fighting Illini. Weather permitting, Penn State will play its first outdoor match at home of the season at the Sarni Tennis Center. Action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
