UNIVERSITY PARK, PA., - November 1, 2008; After the first day of competition Penn State's women fencers finish extremely well. Redshirt sophomore Doris Willette (Lafayette, Calif.) came back strong after a year spent training for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
In a major upset against the World Champion, Courtney Hurley, the true freshman Nina Westman (Kalmar, Sweden) takes first in epee after her debut as a collegiate athlete. Keri Byerts (Webster, N.Y.) was also successful in the epee competition with an 8th place finish.
We also see the true freshman Monica Aksamit (Matawan, N.J.) take third for Penn State in the saber division in her first tournament of this collegiate season.
The final dual of the day in foil featured Penn State's own Allison Glasser (Piedmont, Calif.) and Doris Willette (Lafayette, Calif.). After a close dual, Willette came out with the victory to be named the first place winner in the foil division.
Tomorrow, Sunday November 2, will mark the final day of competition in the Garret Open, with Penn State's men fencers starting at 8:30am in the White Building.
