UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's swimming & diving team had a successful home opener by defeating West Virginia, 145-96, on Saturday afternoon at McCoy Natatorium. The Nittany Lions were led by the performances of Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.), Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis.) and Basil Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia), which were apart of seven of the team's nine victories.

On a day where the 1999 Big Ten Championship team was honored, the current roster of Nittany Lions (2-0)did their best to emulate the winning performances of old by taking nine of 11 swimming events against the Mountaineers (0-1).

Alden and company served up the team's first victory in the 400 medley relay, winning the event in a time of 3:21.37, six seconds ahead of WVU's "A" squad. Dan Fimbianti (Mahwah, N.J.), Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.) and Kaaki swam the first three legs of the winning relay.

Alden continued his triumphs, notching wins in the100 and 200 freestyle events. The sophomore won the 200 in a time of 1:40.67 and took the 100 with a time of 45.93. The victory in the 200 was by 2.2 seconds over fellow Lion Fimbianti (48.13).

Kaaki scored wins in the 50 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay. In the 50 free, Kaaki won with a time of 20.64. In the relay, Kaaki teamed up with Jon Cochrane (Boalsburg, Pa.), Ben Ryan (State College, Pa.) and John Austin (Kennett Square, Pa.).

Alden wasn't the only youngster to shine at McCoy on Saturday as newcomer Bushman tallied victories in the 200 butterfly and 400 IM. In the 200 fly, Bushman won in a time of 1:51.91. In the 400 IM the freshman out of Wisconsin swam to a time of 4:04.41.

The Nittany Lions will return to action next week when they travel for a two-day dual meet at Virginia Tech. The meet will kick off Friday at 6:00 p.m. followed up with the conclusion of the meet on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Blacksburg, Va.
