UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior Katherine Murphy
Katherine Murphy is a senior out of Portsmouth, R.I., who has participated in all 10 rounds this season for the Nittany Lions. Her top finish was at the Spider Invitational hosted by Richmond where she finished in a tie for 10th place. We sat down with her recently to answer a few questions.
Q: How did you first get involved in the game of golf?
A: I got involved with golf because of my dad. He actually played in college. I've been at it forever. I started playing at a really young age and continued playing competitive golf from twelve on.
Q: Why did you choose Penn State?
A: I was recruited to play at a couple of places and when I came on my recruiting trip here it just felt right. I was looking for a big school, a big sport school with a pretty good business program so that's why I chose Penn State.
Q: What are some challenges that you have had to overcome either on or off of the golf course?
A: I think one of the biggest things, especially being an athlete, is your time management and just all of the things that you have to do on a daily basis. Still, I'm a senior now and I'm still working on that.
Q: What is your best memory of Penn State so far?
A: Last season, our last round, we shot a 297. That's the first time I've been on a team where we broke 300 so I think that's one of my best memories at Penn State.
Q: What is the greatest lesson you have learned so far at Penn State?
A: I think this is a lesson that I've learned over the course of my life is always strive for bigger and better because you can do anything you set your mind to.
Q: What do you do for fun outside of golf?
A: At school I just hang out. I love spending time with my friends and I have a huge family and I love spending time with family. Other than that, I like to be outdoors. I hike Mt. Nittany every once and a while and just enjoying the mountains and Pennsylvania.
Q: What are your plans after Penn State?
A: I got a job with BlackRock Investments in Princeton, New Jersey so I'll be starting there up in August. From May to July I'm definitely going to enjoy my summer and go on a few trips with friends and family.
Q: What are a few things you want to do in your life?
A: My dad and I always talked about going to Ireland or Scotland to play golf and I think that would just be fun because he started me out in golf and he's still probably a better golfer than I am at this time. I'm looking forward to traveling and starting a new chapter in my life.
Q: Do you have a hidden talent or something people might not know about you?
A: Something that somebody wouldn't know about me is I probably eat chocolate for about every meal of the day and I tell everybody I just feel better when I eat it.
Q: Who's the funniest person on the team?
A: I'm probably the funniest person on the team just because I'm sarcastic. I think Emily Ransone is pretty close up there with me but she just tries to follow my footsteps.
