UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--The 39th Annual Garret Open kicked off today with the women's fencing competitions. The Penn State women's fencers struggled for a first place finish but were able to break the top three in both the epee and saber competitions.
2010 National Champion Margherita Guzzi Vincenti made it to the semi-finals in the women's epee but fell short to Katarzyna Dabrowa of Ohio State, who went on to take first. Vincenti finished in third with teammate Anne Stephenson finishing in tenth.
Junior Monica Aksamit fenced her way to third in the women's saber. Fellow Nittany Lion Nicole Glon found herself in the top ten with a seventh place finish.
In the women's foil Kylei McGill and Olga Ostatnigrosh came out strong. The two finished in fifth and thirteenth, respectively.
The Garret Open will continue tomorrow at 8:30 a.m with the men's competition in the White Building.
