Nittany Lions Head to Temple University

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 23, 2011 - With Regionals quickly approaching the Penn State men's and women's fencing teams are looking to fine tune the skills they have been working on all season. This weekend they will get that chance as they head to Philadelphia to compete in a one-day event. Princeton, Duke, St. John's and the host school Temple University will all be present.

St. John's may prove to be Penn State's biggest competition ranking third in the Second USFCA College Fencing Coaches' Poll released today, February 23. For the men St. John's is preceded by number one Notre Dame and number two Harvard. Penn State remains at four with Ohio State rounding out the top five.

Notre Dame leads the pack for the women's poll as well, with Ohio State at two and Princeton at three. St. John's holds the number four spot followed by Penn State at five.

Head Coach Emmanuil Kaidanov will send some of Penn State's finest to compete this weekend, including his dominate men's foil group and reigning National Champion Margherita Guzzi-Vincenti.

For the men's foil Miles Chamley-Watson, Jeremy Goldstein, Daniel Gomez-Tanamachi and David Willette will all be making appearances. All-Americans Watson and Willette have found great success this season with a combined record, 31-10 and Jeremy Goldstein is coming off of a third place finish at the Junior Olympics this past weekend. Sophomore Gomez has gone 37-8 as a part of the men's foil team which has proven to be consistently strong throughout the season.

The women's epee will be led by Sophomore Marghertia Guzzi-Vincenti who carries with her an astonishing 50-4 record for the season.

The competition will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb 27.
