Nittany Lions Look to Qualify for Nationals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; March 9, 2011 - The twelve time National Champion Nittany Lions will begin their quest this weekend, Mar. 12, for a third consecutive title. The Mid-Atlantic South Regionals will serve as the individual qualifier for the Nittany Lions. Head Coach Emmanuil Kaidanov will send 27 of the Penn State fencers into action for the one-day event.

Defending National Champion in the women's epee, Margherita Guzzi-Vincenti goes into action with a 60-6 season record going undefeated in 19 of her duals this season. The women's epee has a record of 22-3 for the season.

Women's team captain Doris Willette, 28-6 in the foil, will be appearing in hopes of reclaiming the National Title she earned in 2009. The women's foil has gone 17-8 in duals this season.

Monika Aksamit has led the women's saber this season with an overall record of 35-11. The junior has proved to be an outstanding addition to the women's saber who has gone 15-10 for the season.

The men's foil has had a nearly flawless season thus far going 22-2. Sophomore David Willette has gone 26-3, while teammate Michael El-Saleh holds a record of 40-9.

Team Captain Aleksander Ochocki has helped lead the men's saber to an overall record of 15-9. The junior holds a personal record of 18-4. He looks to reclaim a National Title won in 2009.

Anthony Green has proved himself to be a vital asset to the men's epee going 27-19 for the season. As a whole the men's epee ends the regular season 12-12.
