UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa..; April 3, 2011 - The Penn State women's tennis team (5-11, 0-4) lost to the No. 18 Northwestern Wildcats, 7-0 on Sunday. Senior Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) and freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) earned the lone victory for the Nittany Lions in third doubles.
Zobeideh and Sandor started the match off for the Nittany Lions in third doubles as they earned a 8-3 victory over Northwestern's Elena Chernyakova and Brittany Wowchuck. The Wildcats tied the race for the doubles point as Maria Msolova and Belina Niu defeated freshman Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and junior Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) 8-4 in second doubles. In first doubles, sophomores Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J) fell to the No. 7 ranked doubles pairing of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton, 8-4, to give the Wildcats the doubles point.
Action moved to singles as Bedard faced off against Stacey Lee in fifth singles. Bedard fought hard in the first set but fell to Lee, 6-3, 6-0 to give Northwestern a 2-0 lead. Januskova matched up against No. 16 Maria Msolova in first singles and fell, 6-2, 6-1, as the Wildcats increased their lead to 3-0. Sandor fell to No. 92 Kate Turyvy, 6-3, 6-1, clinching the victory for the Wildcats.
In sixth singles, Perrotta fell to Abu Mushrefova after forcing her to a seven game set, 6-3, 7-5. Zobeideh played solid in fourth singles against No. 50 Wowchuk but was forced to retire due to injury, giving Northwestern the match, 3-4. Simidian squared off aginst No. 74 Niu in second singles and competed hard in the first set before falling 6-3, 6-2.
Penn State will continue Big Ten play as they travel to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans on Sat., Apr. 9 at 11 a.m. followed by a match-up with the Michigan Wolverines on Sun., Apr. 10 at 11 a.m.
