Penn State Fencers Back in Action After Time Off

PORTLAND, Ore. - After a couple weeks off from action the Penn State men's and women's fencing teams joined over 1,000 of the nations top fencers to compete in the North American Cup this weekend. The event spanned four days, Jan. 13-16, and served as a selection event for both squads that will compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games as well as the teams that will compete at the Junior and Cadet World Championships in Moscow in April.

Sophomore Nicole Glon had a standout performance in the Junior Women's Saber event tying for third with Margaret McDonald. In the men's saber, team captain Aleksander Ochocki had a solid 10th place finish followed closely by teammate Adrian Bak who took 13th.

Margherita Guzzi-Vincenti and Oksana Samorodov had a close finish in the women's epee, taking 13th and 14th, respectively. For the men, Jeffrey Miller tied for 35th with Harrison MacRae.

Freshman Alina Antokhina had a strong performance in the Junior Women's foil finishing in 9th. Kane Gladnick went on to take 22nd. In the men's foil competition, Jeremy Goldstein ended the weekend in 15th. Teammates David Gomez Tanamachi and Rylan Delap dueled their way to 32nd and 42nd, respectively.

Next up the Nittany Lions will travel to St. John's this weekend, Jan. 22. The one-day event will begin at 8:30 a.m.
