Men's Golf Returns to Pinehurst Intercollegiate for Fourth Consecutive Season

March 9, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team will return to the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, presented by GolfPride, for the fourth consecutive season at The Club at Pinehurst No. 6 in Pinehurst, N.C, March 10-11.

The field will feature a variety of Division I teams, four of which Penn State competed against during the fall, including Ball State, Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Marshall, Old Dominion, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Richmond, Villanova, VCU and Virginia Tech.

The Nittany Lion line up will consist of senior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.), juniors Anthony DeGol (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) and Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W.Va.), sophomore Shane Stewart (Dublin, Ohio) and freshman Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.). Freshman Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Arkansas) will compete as an individual.

In years past, the Nittany Lions have experienced much success on the links at Pinehurst. Most recently, the team finished tied for third at both the 2010 and 2011 editions. Their most notable performance, however, occurred in 2009 when the squad not only clinched the tournament title, but also rewrote the record books. Penn State posted the lowest 54-hole finish (852) and the lowest final-round score (279) in Pinehurst history, and still holds both records to date.

The tournament will begin with practice rounds Friday (March 9), while competition will commence Saturday (March 10). The tournament is free and the public is welcome.
