CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Penn State women's golf team finished the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston, with the same score from the day before. The Nittany Lions finished in 13th place out of 24 teams and carded a three round score of 885 (293-296-296), shaving 26 strokes off of last season's Cougar Classic score of 911. Penn State finished just three strokes behind Wisconsin, and ahead of ranked teams including LSU and South Carolina.
Junior Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) finished up the Cougar Classic with her third straight round of 71, finishing the tournament tied for sixth place at 3 under par-72. She posted the best score for the Nittany Lions and played extremely well in the first tournament of the year. Junior Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) also played a very strong three rounds, finishing up Day 3 with a 2 over par-72. Ellen finished in a tie for 25th place the Cougar Classic, posting a total score of 218. Sophomore Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) ended Day 3 with a score of 77, 5 over par-72. Her total score of 226 (75-74-77) left her in a tie for 65th place.
Coach St. Pierre was very happy with her team's performance in the first tournament of the year, saying " I am proud of Christina finishing sixth, and I am also proud of the team for their great start to the season, beating several top teams that were in this tournament."
The overall winner of the 2012 Cougar Classic was the University of Florida, posting a combined score of 852 (286-279-287). Duke was the runner up with a combined score of 858. The individual golfer that won the Cougar Classic was Camilla Hedberg of the University of Florida, who carded a combined score of 203 (69-66-68). She finished the tournament 13 under par, four strokes better than second place finisher Lindy Duncan of Duke.
The Nittany Lions will be back in action in the Yale Intercollegiate Tournament, which begins September 22. The tournament will be taking place at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
