UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team will send five members of the squad to the UVa Fall Classic this weekend, Oct. 5-7. The classic is hosted in Charlottesville, Va. by the University of Virginia. Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.), Guanhua Chen(DaLian, China), C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.), Ramy Labna(Doha, Qatar), and Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) will all make the trip.
Freshman Matt Barry had a very impressive fall season debut at the Princeton Invitational. He picked up three wins on the weekend, including a tough 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4 win over Princeton's Matt Spindler in the draw semifinal. Barry reached the final, but fell 7-5, 6-4 to Columbia's Ashok Narayana. He will look to continue his early season success this weekend.
Guanhua Chen will make his fall debut in Virginia. Last year, he went 2-4 in singles, including a 1-4 record last fall.
Senior C.J. Griffin, will compete in his second tournament of the fall. He also participated at the Princeton Invitational, but is still seeking his first win after dropping a pair of matches.
Chris Young picked up his first win of the fall season at the Princeton Invitational, a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson's Peter Skvarka.
Sophomore Ramy Labna will look to build on his Princeton Invitational performance. The Qatar native picked up a pair of tough wins over Fairleigh Dickinson's Dom Devaux-Lowell(4-6, 6-1, 1-0(3)) and Penn's Jason Magnes(3-6, 6-2, 1-0(4)). Labna also reached the consolation semifinal.
Barry and Griffin will combine to compete in the doubles bracket. Chen and Young will also pair up in doubles.
