UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Members of the Penn State men's fencing team had impressive performances in all three weapons today as the 41st annual Garret Open came to a close.
Nittany Lion fencers dominated the foil event by taking first, second and third place. Junior two-time All American David Willette placed first in the event, by defeating his teammate Olympian Daniel Gomez-Tanamachi 15-11 in the finals. Daniel's younger brother, sophomore David Gomez-Tanamachi, cruised to a third place finish by beating Harvard's Jerry Chang 15-8. Redshirt sophomore Gianni Di Cioccio and junior Jeremy Goldstein placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
In men's epee, sophomore Jeffrey Miller placed second after falling 15-11 to Harvard's Mike Raynis. Men's saber saw similar success as freshman standout Shaul Gordon placed third. Gordon won a hard-fought battle 15-12 against University of Pennsylvania's Evan Prochniak to take home bronze. Other Nittany Lions with impressive performances in saber included Alex Schneller (8th place), team captain Adrian Bak (9th place), and Pawel Puchalski (13th place).
Yesterday both Nicole Glon and Margherita Guzzi Vincenti placed first in their events, which makes a total of seven Nittany Lion fencers who placed in the top three of their events. There was a total of fourteen fencers who placed within the top 10 of their events this weekend.
Next weekend members of the team will travel to Virginia Beach to compete in the Olympic Trials and Junior NAC.
