UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Pegula Ice Arena, the state-of-the-art, $90 million facility that will serve as the home to Penn State Hockey, will host its first game Friday, Oct. 11 when the Penn State men's hockey team opens the 2013-14 season against the Army Black Knights. The Friday night contest, which will be the weekend's lone game, will take place during Penn State's annual homecoming weekend.
The 2013-14 campaign will mark a historic venture for the Nittany Lions as they will also begin competition in the Big Ten with traditional powers Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Each Big Ten opponent will travel to Happy Valley for two games apiece for a total of 10 conference home games. Penn State will also host several non-conference matchups.
Season ticket deposits for the 2013-14 season are being accepted and can be placed by calling 1-800-NITTANY Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. or by visiting the Bryce Jordan Center Athletic Ticket Office weekdays from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For more information about season tickets, including seating options, click here. In 2012-13, head coach Guy Gadowsky has led the Nittany Lions to a 12-13-0 record during their inaugural NCAA Division I season with marquee victories against Ohio State, Michigan State and Vermont.
Several Nittany Lions have excelled during the 2012-13 season. Freshman forward David Glen (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) ranks second among the nation's freshmen with 16 goals and is tied for the team lead in points (25) with classmate Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska). Junior Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.) has recorded 12 points (6g, 6a) during his team-best eight-game point-scoring streak, while six Nittany Lions have reached double-digit totals.
On the blue line, freshman Connor Varley (Lansdale, Pa.) leads the team's defensemen with 12 points (4g, 5a), while classmate Mark Yanis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) has reached the score sheet at least once, which included the game-winning goal Saturday against Alabama Huntsville, in five of the last six games. Between the pipes, freshman Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.) has paced Penn State with an 8-8-0 record, a 2.52 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.
The Nittany Lions will close out Greenberg Ice Pavilion, which opened in January 1981, this weekend with two exhibition games against the ACHA's Oklahoma Sooners. Penn State will then conclude its inaugural season with a two-game series at No. 18 Wisconsin Feb. 24-25.
