TULSA, Okla - Russell Bader and Michael Reilly dropped a tough battle in their Qualifying Doubles Draw second round match. Bader also competed in a consolation Qualifying Singles match, which he won. Tomas Hanzlik fell in his consolation match.
After receiving a first round bye in the Qualifying Doubles Draw, Bader (Austin, Texas) and Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) faced the No. 9 seed in the draw, Florida's Elliott Orkin and Gordon Watson. The duo was ranked 57th in the Preseason ITA Doubles Poll. Bader and Reilly gave the Florida pair a good match, but fell 8-7.
The senior, Bader, also played in a Qualifying Singles consolation match. Bader took on a fellow Big Ten player, Ohio State's Constantin Christ. Bader earned a straight set win, 6-4, 6-1. Bader went 1-1 at the ITA All-Americans.
Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) took on Stanford's Nolan Paige in his consolation match. Paige won the first set 6-2 and held a 3-1 lead in the second set when Hanzlik retired.
Hanzlik finishes the tournament with a 4-2 record, including wins over Adam Taylor(Murray State), Szymon Tatarczyk(Purdue), Yannick Junger(UT-San Antonio) and Tyler Pham(UC Irvine).
Overall, Penn State went 8-5 in singles in Tulsa. Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain), Alex Fennell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) and Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) also contributed wins.
The Nittany Lions travel to the UVa Fall Invite next weekend.
