BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team finished the second day of the ITA Atlantic Regional. Three Nittany Lions advanced in the Main Draw second round, while two doubles teams advanced in that Main Draw.
The Main Draw continues on Saturday with the second round of singles and round of 32 and round of 16 doubles.
After winning two matches on Thursday in the Qualifying Singles round, David Kohan (Sydney, Australia) continued a strong tournament by knocking off James Madison's Sebastian Salinas, 6-3, 6-3. The sophomore moves on to the second round, where he will match up against Norfolk State's Robin Riethmueller.
Freshman Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain) took on Georgetown's Shane Korber in the first round. After dropping the first set 6-3, Castells bounced back with a tough 7-6(6) win. He then came out on top in a close 7-5 third set. Castells advances to face Richmond's Ethan Dunbar on Saturday.
Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) faced Richmond's Canyon Teague in the first round. Reilly earned a straight set win, 6-3, 6-4. Reilly meets UMBC's Justin Carter in the second round.
Freshman Christian Lutschaunig (Richboro, Pa.) met UMBC's Alex Drean in the first round. Lutschaunig fell 6-3, 7-5.
Fellow freshman Nika Dolidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) matched up against Richmond's Jacob Dunbar. Dolidze dropped the first set 6-3, but bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second set. However, Dunbar responded in the third set with another 6-3 win.
Ramy Labna (Doha, Qatar) also moved onto the Main Draw after consecutive wins in the qualifying round. Labna could not continue his momentum, falling 6-3, 6-1 to Duquesne's Pete Carpenter.
Russell Bader (Austin, Texas), Matt Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.), Alex Fennell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) and Roman Trkulja (Toronto, Canada) all begin their regional play on Saturday after receiving first-round byes.
Barry and Lutschaunig combined in the first round of Main Draw Doubles. The duo claimed an 8-5 victory over Morgan State's Evan Ward and Duk Young Park. On Saturday, they take on Richmond's Ethan and Jacob Dunbar.
Freshmen Castells and Dolidze paired up to knock off James Madison's Robert Stirling and Miljan Ruzic, 8-6. In the second round, they match up against Virginia Tech's Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro.
Kohan and Chris Young (Melbourne, Australia) also combined on Friday, but fell to Navy's Thomas Pecor and Austin Jones, 8-2. The Navy team was a top 16 seed in the draw.
Two Nittany Lion doubles teams start play on Saturday after receiving first-round byes. Bader pairs up with Fennell, while Reilly and Trkulja also team up.
