Up to bat: Penn State will look to snap a four-game skid by facing one of its most familiar rivals, Bucknell, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to open a five-game homestand in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Lions will host another in-state, Patriot League foe Wednesday when Lafayette visits before returning to Big Ten play Friday with a three-game series against Michigan.
All-Time Series vs. Bucknell: The Bison are Penn State's oldest active rivals, as the two teams' first meeting came in 1882, with the Nittany Lions recording a win. The two sides have met a combined 154 times and Penn State leads the all-time series 124-29-1. Currently, the Blue and White have won 22 out of the last 23 meetings. The two teams played a four-game weekend series last season, in which PSU took three games. The Bison managed to halt their losing streak to the Lions at 21 games by claiming the third game of the series. Previously, the last time Bucknell defeated the Lions was on March 31, 1998 in a 3-2 game. Penn State has an overall record of 65-10-1 against BU at home and a 19-game home winning streak, as Bucknell's last win in University Park was April 6, 1995 (3-2). The Bison are 0-10 on Medlar Field.
Bucknell at a Glance: Picked to win the Patriot League, Bucknell started the season strong, but has dropped seven of its last eight, which have all been conference games. Navy swept the Bison, winning the final two games in extra innings, and Lehigh took three of four, as the teams split a pair of extra inning contests. BU's signature wins came in February when they defeated Wake Forest and swept VCU in a three-game series. Joe Ogren leads the team in nearly every major offensive category.
All-Time Series vs. Lafayette: The series dates back to 1899, but this is the first meeting between Penn State and Lafayette since 1990, when the teams split a doubleheader. The Leopards prevailed in four of the last five meetings to event the series at 23-23-2 all-time.
Lafayette at a Glance: Lafayette stuggled on the field and with Mother Nature early on, starting the year at 2-14 and losing 11 games to weather. The Leaopards got back on track this past weekend though, sweeping conference foe Army in four games. Steven Cohen leads the team batting .295 with three home runs and 10 RBIs.
Last Time Out: PSU was swept at Ohio State in a three-game series. The Buckeyes won convincingly in the first game, 7-1, but the Lions battled back in the final two games. OSU was able to prevail though with two walk-off wins in the bottom of the ninth, breaking a 6-6 tie Sunday to win 7-6, and rallying from a run down Monday to win 8-7.
Dominate the State: Penn State is 2-0 against in-state foes this season, as Greg Guers has been the hero in both. Guers drove in the go-ahead runs in the eighth against Villanova, and the deciding runs at Pitt, tying it in the third with an RBI-double, and then singling with runners on the corners in the 12th.
In Guer: Guers has homered three times in the last four games, going deep twice last week against Kent State and again Monday at OSU. He homered twice in 2014 and was the only Nittany Lion to go deep in spacious Medlar Field. His two homers against Kent State are the only home PSU homers this season, and the opposition has just one homer at Medlar this season.
Home Sweet Home: The Lions are 2-16 away from Medlar Field (one loss at a neutral site), but 6-2 at home, and 7-2 in Pennsylvania.
