NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The No. 20 Penn State women's swimming and diving team started the New Year on a winning note, defeating both Yale (196-157) and Rutgers (242-111) in a double dual meet that concluded Saturday afternoon at the Kiphuth Exhibition Pool.

Penn State (6-2) had its best finishes in the 500 freestyle, as Katelyn Sowinski (Severna Park, Md.) touched in 4:52.89 and Casey Francis (East Meadow, N.Y.) touched in 4:53.97 to finish 1-2.

It was Yale's (6-1) first dual meet defeat this season, while Rutgers fell to 5-2.

"It was a real challenging weekend in reference to coming off our training trip the first week of school and going on the road," said head coach Tim Murphy. "Today I feel like we had a lot more energy than Friday night's session. I thought we did a good job racing and did the kind of things we need to do as a team to move forward."

Melissa Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico) claimed gold in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.10, while Taylor Cameron (Burlington, Ontario) was third in 2:19.26. Monika Gonzalez Hermosillo (Mexico City, Mexico) won her second event of the weekend by claiming the 400 individual medley in 4:22.84.

Claiming silver for the Lions were Niki Price (Manchester, Pa.) in the 200 backstroke (2:01.12) and Alyson Ackman (Montreal, Quebec) in the 100 freestyle in 50.80.

Ackman was also a member of Penn State's victorious 200 medley relay performance, which finished in 1:42.96. She was joined by Allie Pennetti (Wexford, Pa.), Haley Sinatro (West Hartford, Conn.) and Katie Saloky (Bloomsburg, Pa.).

Sinatro posted the top performance Friday, winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.49 to best the provisional NCAA standard.

Sinatro was also a part of Penn State's victorious 400 medley relay effort (3:44.14), as she was joined by Ackman, Rodriguez and Kaitlin Jones (Midlothian, Va.)

Jones reached the top four in a pair of events individually, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:49.64, followed by fellow Lions Gonzalez-Hermosillo (1:51.00) and Megan Wujciak (Livingston, N.J.) (1:51.43) in third and fourth, respectively.

Gonzalez-Hermosillo earned her second podium finish of the day by touching first in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.61. Wujciak was third again in 2:05.47, while Katie Rowe (Glenville, N.Y.) was fourth (2:06.53).
