UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 21, 2017ââ'¬" The Nittany Lions women's tennis team fell short 4-3 in their matchup against Virginia Commonwealth University.
The singles matches from today are as follows: Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) fell to Rasmussen 6-3, 6-1. Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) was defeated by Janina Braun. Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) came up short against Magda Aubets 6-2, 6-2. Dasha Sapogova beat Darya Berezhnaya in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) was victorious against Noumea Witmus 6-2, 6-4. After a competitive three sets Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) fell short against Gabriela Araujo 6-1, 7-6, 6-1.
"Our team fought hard today. We battled VCU for over four hours and just came up a little bit short," said head coach Chris Cagle. I give VCU credit for standing toe to toe with us and in the end it came down to just a few points. We have a short turnaround with West Virginia coming in tomorrow so we know shift our focus to tomorrow's match."
Penn State notched an extra point in doubles. Blik/McCluskey fell to Rasmussen/Braun 6-4. Zuhse/Dunn picked up a doubles win against Berezhnaya/Aubets 6-4. Smith/Hanley beat Witmus/Araujo 7-6.
Penn State is back in action tomorrow morning when they take on West Virginia at 11:00a.m.
