NEWARK, N.J. - The No. 14 Penn State men's volleyball team outlasted NJIT on the road winning 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 15-8) in five sets behind the career night from Lee Smith Friday night at Fleisher Center on the campus of NJIT.

Lee Smith led the Nittany Lion offense collecting a career high 17 kills on 34 swings finishing the night with a .324 hitting percentage. The redshirt-sophomore also tallied a career high seven blocks leading all competitors.

Chris Nugent and Calvin Mende contributed 14 kills apiece. Luke Braswell finished with 42 assists, while Nugent and Mende contributed 12 combined digson the defensive side of the ball.

Defensively, Penn State (7-4, 2-0) combined for a total 13.5 team blocks with four Nittany Lions posting five or more blocks.

Penn State and NJIT split the first two sets, hitting the break tied at 1-1 following a 25-19 opening set win by the Highlanders and a close25-21 second set win by Penn State.

Penn State took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set but the Highlanders forced a fifth and deciding set.

Penn State got down to business posting a perfect sideout percentage of 100% against NJIT in the fifth set on all eight occasions.

As a team, Penn State hit .254 recording 53 total kills and seven service aces on the night.

Penn State returns to the court tomorrow night as they take on the Tigers of Princeton with a first serve slated for 7 p.m. ET.
