UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team opens the 2017-18 season at the Gopher Invitational Sunday-Monday, Sept. 10-11, hosted by Big Ten foe Minnesota at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.
The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes of play on Sunday and an 18-hole final round on Monday, with play beginning at 9 a.m. ET both days. The par-71 course plays 7,368 yards. Live scoring for the Gopher Invitational will be available online.
In addition to host Minnesota, Penn State joins the field with five top-25 ranked teams including 2017 NCAA champion and third-ranked Oklahoma. The 16 total participating institutions include Arizona State (21), Arkansas, Baylor (4), Charlotte, Iowa, Kent State (T-23), Michigan State, New Mexico, Pepperdine, Purdue, San Diego State, St. John's (Minn.) and Virginia Tech.
"We get started this year with a premier collegiate event at Windsong Farms against a top-flight field," said Penn State head coach Greg Nye. "The Gopher (Invitational) prides itself on running a first-class event that annually attracts a tough field. We look forward to the competition."
Five Nittany Lions will be competing in the tournament with a lineup consisting of senior Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.), juniors Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.), JD Hughes (Carlisle, Pa.) and Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.). Sophomore Alec Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) will also be competing for the Blue and White.
Last year, Nye led the Penn State to an NCAA Championship appearance, finishing in a tie for 24th in the year's final tournament. Four of the five participants in the 2017 NCAA Championships are competing in the Gopher Invitational.
