Men's Gymnastics Travels to Army for West Point Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.- Penn State men's gymnastics will travel to compete in the West Point Open this weekend for the 26th time in program history. The meet will run from Saturday, Jan. 13-14 at 7 p.m. in the Holleder Center. The men will compete against Army West Point, Navy, Nebraska and Springfield.
 
The Nittany Lions are ranked first in the Big Ten this week and first in the Road to Nationals rankings after opening weekend for several teams.

HISTORY AT THE WEST POINT OPEN
Penn State has won eight straight team titles at the West Point Open and has won 23 of the 31 titles in the overall history of the event.
 
At the 2022 West Point Open the Nittany Lions finished first with a team score of 393.650.
 
Matt Cormier placed third in the All-Around, while Michael Artlip placed fourth. Cormier was 1.55 points behind the winner with 78.450 points. Ethan Dick placed first on the pommel horse (13.950) and Cormier had the best scores of the meet on floor (14.000) and the high bar (13.700).
 
NITTANY LIONS TO WATCH
Senior captain Cormier was tabbed the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week and the CGA Gymnast of the Week after his career performance in Rec Hall last weekend. He led the Nittany Lions to a 402.900-378.300 victory over the Black Knights with four stuck landings and three first place finishes on floor, vault and high bar. Cormier also notched personal best scores on rings (13.900), vault (14.800) and high bar (14.050). 
 
Junior Michael Jaroh finished at the top of the other three events at the meet. He earned a 14.000 on pommel horse, a 14.200 on rings and 14.000 on parallel bars. His floor routine earned him a career best 13.100 score and second place finish. Jaroh finished first in the all-around with a score of 79.350.
 
Freshmen Kacper Garnczarek, Will Fleck, Ian Raubal and Matt Underhill made their Penn State debuts. Underhill earned a third place finish on rings in his opening day.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Three of four opponents will open their seasons this weekend at the West Point Open. Penn
State and Army were the only two to compete this past weekend.

2022 SEASON REVIEW 
The Penn State Nittany Lion's ended the regular season with a record of 2-4 and a 0-4 record in the BIG Ten. Their highest team score of the season was at Michigan (3/19) with 401.800 points. 
 
Nine of the team's athletes competed in the National Championships final. Chase Clingman won the pommel horse title with a personal-best score of 14.425 at the National Collegiate Men's Gymnastics Championships. 
 
The team placed fifth at the Big Ten Championships held in Rec Hall at Penn State. Clingman claimed first on pommel horse with a score of 14.425. Michael Jaroh finished third on vault (14.500) and fifth on rings (13.800). Josh Karnes took second on parallel bars with 14.300. 
 
Clingman and Michael Jaroh earned All-Big first team awards and Josh Karnes and Nick Mock earned All-Big second team awards.
 
The Lion's had five CGA First Team All-America Scholar Athletes including Michael Artlip, Derek Schlagenhauf, Nate Warren, Eric Lung and Nick Mock.
