No. 23 Women’s Gymnastics Set for Two-Meet Weekend

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — No. 23 Penn State women's gymnastics (10-6, 3-6 Big Ten) will hit the road for a pair of away meets this weekend. The Nittany Lions will compete at Southern Utah on Friday, March 8 at 9 p.m. before traveling to No. 21 NC State for a 4 p.m. quad meet on Sunday, March 10 with Texas Woman's University and Penn.
 
Penn State earned its second-best team total of the season on Friday in its last home meet of the 2024 campaign. The Nittany Lions earned a 196.825 to take down Towson (196.775), No. 25 Ball State (195.875), and West Virginia (195.800) in their Senior Night quad meet. Using their strong last home meet as momentum, Penn State will compete in three-straight road meets to wrap up its regular season before the Big Ten Championships at the end of March.
 
Penn State is currently 1-1 all-time against Southern Utah since the teams first met in 2010, while the Nittany Lions are 10-4 against NC State, 3-1 against Texas Woman's, and 9-0 against Penn all-time.

LAST TIME OUT 
 
Penn State put on an excellent display on Friday night, earning 49-plus team totals on each apparatus once again. A career-best all-around night from Kalea McElligott (39.375 pts) and a pair of event wins by Isabella Salcedo (beam and floor) led to the Nittany Lions' second-best team score of the 2024 season.
 
VAULT — No. 25
 
The Nittany Lions started strong on Friday night, recording a season-best 49.250 on vault in rotation number one. Ava Piedrahita scored a 9.9 to lead the way, while 9.85 tallies for Maddie Johnston and McElligott each recorded 9.85s. Penn State earned a 9.8-or-better on all six of its routines on vault to start out a fantastic night.
 
BARS — No. 33
 
Gabbie Gallentine led the Nittany Lions' bars group with a 9.875. Johnston went 9.825 while McElligott, Piedrahita, and Jessica Johanson collected 9.775 scores to round out the five scorers fo the Nittany Lions. Penn State scored a 49.025 on the apparatus.
 
BEAM — No. 16
 
Salcedo collected the first of her two event titles with a 9.9 on beam to lead Penn State's 16th-ranked beam squad. McElligott and Johnston earned excellent 9.875 totals while Amani Herring and Ashley Maul each colleted 9.8 scores. The Nittany Lions posted a 49.250 as a team in rotation three.
 
FLOOR — No. 40
 
Penn State rounded out competition on Friday with its best event score of the night, a 49.300 total on floor. Salcedo's second-straight 9.9 earned a share of the event title, while McElligott and Alyssa Kramer each earned 9.875 totals. Kramer's total was her fifth 9.875 total of her freshman campaign. Piedrahita and Herring rounded out the scorers with 9.825s while Maul earned a 9.775 in her event debut for the Nittany Lions.
  
WHAT'S NEXT
 
Following their two-meet weekend, the Nittany Lions head to George Washington on Sunday, March 17 for a 1 p.m. tri-meet against the Revolutionaries and the Towson Tigers. The meet will serve as Penn State's regular season finale with the Big Ten Championships set to take place on March 23 at Michigan State.
