UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women’s Tennis will compete in Philadelphia for the ITA Northeast Regional Championship from Oct. 10-15.
Kate Zink, Yvonne Zuffova and Jelena Vico are scheduled to play qualifying singles, which will begin Thursday, Oct. 10. The rest of the competition will start on Friday, Oct. 11. Patricia Grigoras, Olivia Dorner, Maiko Uchijima and Jordina Cegarra are in the main draw for singles. Doubles will begin Friday as well with Penn State sending the pairs of Uchijima and Dorner, Cegarra and Grigoras and Vico and Zuffova.
The squad is coming off a stint at the WVU Martha Thorn Invitational that saw five Nittany Lions win at least one match. Freshman Vico defeated Duquesne’s Jasa Roka (6-1, 6-1) and Louisville’s Berta Miret (6-4, 6-1) and Germany Davis (7-5, 7-6). Fellow first-year Grigoras beat Maryland’s Diya Challa (6-4, 6-0) and Ema Kovacevic (3-6, 7-5, 11-9) and Louisville’s Alice Otis (6-1, 6-4).
Sophomores Zink and Cegarra defeated West Virginia’s Kat Wassick (6-1, 6-1) and Western Michigan’s Sienna Osborne (6-0, 4-6, 10-8), respectively. It was Zink’s first collegiate victory. Zink paired with Grigoras for a doubles win over Duquesne’s Roka and Taisia Yakunina (7-5). Zuffova earned victories over West Virginia’s Millie Haagensen (6-1, 6-2) and Maryland’s Challa (7-5, 6-3).
Dorner and Uchijima last competed at the ITA All-American Championships. Dorner beat Seattle’s Lamija Avdic (6-1, 6-0) and Illinois’ McKenna Schaefbauer (6-4, 6-1) in singles play. The No. 49 ranked doubles pair beat Arkansas’ No. 51 Anet Koskel and Grace O’Donnell (6-1, 7-5) while in Cary, North Carolina as well.
