Penn State Football Announces 10 Additions to 2026 Staff

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State football has announced 10 additions to its staff for the 2026 season, including three on-field coaching staff additions of Taylor Mouser (offensive coordinator/tight ends), Ryan Clanton (offensive line) and Deon Broomfield (secondary).

The following have joined head coach Matt Campbell in Happy Valley and will be a part of the 2026 staff. Titles are subject to change:

ON-FIELD COACHING STAFF BIOS

TAYLOR MOUSER – OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR/TIGHT ENDS

COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Taylor Mouser joins the Nittany Lions as their offensive coordinator, previously spending the last 10 seasons on the Iowa State coaching staff under Matt Campbell.
  • Mouser most recently served the last two years as offensive coordinator and also oversaw the tight end room for the last five seasons.
  • He was named the 2025 Football Scoop Tight Ends Coach of the Year.
  • Mouser has coached a number of All-Americans and All-Big 12 performers to unprecedented success working with the offense, including back Breece Hall, who led the nation in rushing in 2020, became the first unanimous All-American in school history, tight end Charlie Kolar, ISU’s only three-time All-American, and quarterback Brock Purdy, who graduated owning/sharing 32 school records.
  • In recent years, Iowa State produced four of the most prolific offenses in Cyclone football history. Iowa State broke the school record for total offense (444.3) and had the third-best scoring offense (32.2) in school history in 2019, and followed it up with the second-best scoring offense (32.9) and third-best total offense (436.3) totals in Cyclone history in 2020.
  • The Cyclones also set the following school records with Mouser aiding the offense: touchdowns (53; 2019), points (418; 2019), yards per play (6.45; 2019) and rushing touchdowns (31; 2020).
  • The Cyclones closed the 2025 season rushing for at least 150 yards in seven-straight games, the longest streak since doing so for eight-straight games from 2008-09.
  • Carson Hansen (950) and Abu Sama III (732) became the first Cyclone pair to each have over 700 yards rushing in a season since Jim Wingender (1,070) and Mike Williams (781) in 1975.
  • In his first season running the offense in 2024, ISU put together a record-setting season, finishing 11-3 and reaching double-digit victories for the first time in program history, and reaching the Big 12 Championship game after going 7-2 in conference action.
  • Mouser leaned on two of the best wide receivers in the nation as quarterback Rocco Becht connected with Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel for a combined 167 receptions, 2,377 yards and 17 receiving touchdowns. Higgins was named a third-team All-American and Noel was one of seven offensive players to be recognized by the Big 12 Conference coaches. Tight end Stevo Klotz was an All-Big 12 second-team selection.
  • Iowa State capped the season with a thrilling 42-41 win against No. 15 Miami in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. The Cyclones were ranked No. 15 in the final AP Top 25, the second-highest ranking to end a season in school history.
  • Under his guidance, the offense averaged 31.1 points per game, the fifth-most in school history.
  • The Cyclones used a balanced attack, throwing for 25 touchdowns and rushing for 27 TDs, both the fourth-best totals the program has ever produced.
  • ISU’s offense led the nation in big plays in 2023, scoring 11 touchdowns of 50-plus yards.
  • The Cyclones again were among the Top 10 nationally in the red zone with a 93.5% clip, converting on 31-of-33 trips and ranking first in the Big 12 and seventh nationally. ISU went on to earn a trip to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
  • His tight end group combined for seven touchdown receptions by four different players. ISU was one of seven teams nationally with at least four tight ends with a TD reception.
  • Benjamin Brahmer was a Freshman All-American (247Sports and The Athletic) under his tutelage in 2023, breaking the ISU freshman tight end record with 28 receptions and two touchdowns. Stevo Klotz earned the first of two career All-Big 12 second-team honors from the league's coaches at the fullback position.
  • In 2021, the Cyclones recorded the fourth-best scoring average (31.3) and the fifth-best total offense (424.5), respectively, in program history. ISU also ranked second nationally in red zone offense, converting on 47-of-49 trips for a 95.9% clip to help the Cyclones earn their school-record fifth-straight bowl appearance.
  • In his first season as tight ends coach in 2021, Mouser tutored a pair of All-Big 12 performers in Kolar and Chase Allen.
  • Kolar broke ISU tight end single-season records in receptions (62) and receiving yards (756) while earning All-America honors for an unprecedented third-straight season in 2021.
  • The 2021 winner of the William V. Campbell Trophy and a three-time Academic All-American, Kolar’s career totals in receptions (168), receiving yards (2,181) and touchdown catches (23) are the most by a Cyclone tight end and rank in the Top 5 on ISU’s overall career record lists. He also was a three-time Academic All-American.
  • Kolar was a fourth-round draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens in 2022, while Allen signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent.
  • Starting out as a graduate assistant, Mouser worked in the scouting department and then moved into a role as senior quality control for the Cyclone offense in 2019.

  • Adams was a defensive lineman at Adams State (2009-13).

  • A native of Chandler, Arizona, Mouser graduated from Adams State in 2013, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in exercise science and sports administration.

RYAN CLANTON – OFFENSIVE LINE 

COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Ryan Clanton joins the Nittany Lions as the program’s offensive line coach after spending the previous three seasons at Iowa State in the same position. He added run game coordinator to his duties in 2024.
  • In three seasons with the program, Clanton's work with the offensive line helped the Cyclones go from 108.0 rushing yards per game to 160.5 yards in 2024, and then another jump to 174.5 yards in 2025.
  • The Cyclones allowed a combined 51 sacks during the 2023-25 seasons, the eighth-fewest among Power Four teams during that time.
  • The Cyclones closed the 2025 season running for at least 150 yards in seven-straight games, the longest streak since doing so for eight-straight games from 2008-09.
  • Carson Hansen (950) and Abu Sama III (732) became the first Cyclone pair to each have over 700 yards rushing in a season since Jim Wingender (1,070) and Mike Williams (781) in 1975.
  • Offensive lineman Tyler Miller earned All-Big 12 third team honors, while Trevor Buhr and Jim Bonifas earned honorable mention honors.
  • Clanton's offensive line unit helped the Cyclones rush for 25 touchdowns in 2024, the fourth-most in a single season at Iowa State, as the team posted one of the best seasons in program history.
  • The team finished 11-3 overall, the first double-digit win season in school history, and went 7-2 in Big 12 play as it advanced to the conference championship game for the second time in 133 seasons.
  • Jarrod Hufford capped his six-year career earning All-Big 12 honorable mention accolades in his first season playing center. It was the second such honor in his career, earning it as a left guard in 2023.
  • Offensive tackle Jalen Travis was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, becoming the first ISU offensive lineman drafted since 2013. Hufford signed a free agent deal with the Las Vegas Raiders after the draft.
  • His first season saw the Cyclone offensive line unit make gradual improvement throughout the season as ISU finished the season 7-6 overall and 6-3 in Big 12 play, the largest conference win improvement (+5) in Power-5, on its way to playing in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
  • The Cyclones increased their rushing yards per game from the previous season and ranked 11th nationally in sacks allowed with just 14. Iowa State's scoring offense also improved in Clanton's first season on the coaching staff.
  • Clanton saw a pair of his offensive linemen picked in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft during his tenure at UNI. Offensive tackle Trevor Penning was a 2022 first round pick by the New Orleans Saints, while right offensive tackle Spencer Brown was a third-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 2021 draft.
  • At UNI, Clanton was elevated to offensive coordinator prior to the 2022 season. In his first season running the offense, UNI averaged 33 points and 444.9 yards per game, increasing both totals from the previous season.
  • The 2022 Panthers ranked among the nation’s leaders in total offense (16th), third down conversion percentage (52%; 4th), passing yards per completion (14.8; 8th) and tackles for a loss allowed (4.1; 6th).
  • In total, Clanton saw his offensive linemen earn eight All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors in his five seasons with the program. Penning was a First-Team All-American in 2021 and Jackson Scott-Brown earned first-team honors from the Walter Camp Foundation in 2019. Jared Penning earned Freshman All-America accolades and was Freshman Player of the Year from Phil Steele in 2021.
  • The Panthers reached the FCS Playoffs three times in his five seasons, including advancing to the quarterfinals in 2019.
  • Prior to his time at UNI, Clanton spent four seasons at Ventura College (Calif.) where 19 of his 20 starting offensive linemen earned all-conference accolades. Six of his players earned all-state and four earned All-America accolades.
  • He also served offensive coordinator and running game coordinator during his time, with VC finishing among the leaders in red-zone scoring offense, passing touchdowns, third-down conversion percentage, yards per game and first downs per game.

PLAYING CAREER

  • Clanton attended City College of San Francisco and played for the Rams in 2008 and 2009, earning Junior College All-America honors on the offensive line.
  • He later played at the University of Oregon where he was a left tackle, left guard and right guard under head coach Chip Kelly.
  • He spent three seasons in Eugene, redshirting in 2010 as the Ducks reached the 2011 BCS National Championship game. Oregon won the 2012 Rose Bowl and the 2013 Fiesta Bowl.
  • Clanton was a captain on the 2012 team that finished 12-1. The Ducks posted a 36-4 record during his playing career.
  • Clanton was invited to NFL training camps with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers.

  • A native of Bakersfield, California and product of Bakersfield Christian High School, Clanton earned a bachelor’s degree from Oregon in applied economics, business and society in 2013.
  • He received his master’s degree in kinesiology with a specialization in sport management from LSU in 2018.

COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Deon Broomfield joins the Nittany Lions as their defensive backs coach following a five-year stint coaching safeties at Iowa State.
  • Broomfield, who has 10 seasons coaching defensive backs at the collegiate level, spent a season as a defensive assistant with the Houston Texans in 2020.
  • During the 2025, Broomfield tutored third-team All-Big 12 safety Markus Neal, who emerged as one of the best defensive backs in the Big 12 Conference, tying for the team lead with 77 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss, which lead all Big 12 defensive backs.
  • Iowa State's 42 interceptions the last three seasons (2023-25) are tied for 11th-most nationally in that span.
  • The Cyclone safeties were one of the nation's best collective units in 2024 with all three starters earning recognition from the Big 12 coaches, led by Malik Verdon being named an All-Big 12 second-team performer. Jeremiah Cooper and Beau Freyler were honorable mention selections.
  • The group played a significant role in what amounted to the greatest single season in program history. Iowa State posted an 11-3 overall record, the first double-digit win season for the school, and reached the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship game for the second time.
  • The defensive unit overcame multiple injuries and allowed just 22.9 points per game, holding opponents to fewer than 20 points in six games, which tied for the second-most games among Big 12 teams.
  • The Cyclones were first nationally in passing defense, allowing just 165.6 yards per game, while also finishing 22nd nationally in interceptions.
  • The Cyclones had 15 interceptions, including seven picks by the safety group. Freyler had a pair of interceptions and finished his career with six, while Verdon ended his Cyclone tenure with three.
  • In 2023, Broomfield's safety group had 11 interceptions as the Cyclones finished with 16 as a team, which ranked 10th nationally and second in the Big 12 Conference.
  • Cooper picked off five passes and was a first-team All-Big 12 selection, while Freyler added three interceptions and was a second-team All-Big 12 pick.
  • Verdon was an honorable-mention All-Big 12 honoree and had two interceptions, as the safety group anchored a defensive unit that was second in the Big 12 in total defense (363.2) and third in scoring defense (22.8).
  • The 2022 Cyclone defense was among the nation’s elite, leading the Big 12 Conference and ranking fourth nationally in total defense (285.6). The Cyclones were just the third unit in conference history to lead the league in total defense, scoring defense (20.2), rushing defense (107.3) and passing defense (178.2).
  • Broomfield coached Anthony Johnson Jr. to second-team All-Big 12 honors after spending his first four seasons at cornerback. Freyler earned All-Big 12 honorable mention in his sophomore campaign.
  • In his first season coaching the Cyclones, ISU qualified for the Cheez-It Bowl behind one of its best defenses in school history.
  • ISU was third in the league in defensive scoring average (20.5) and was second in the Big 12 and ninth nationally in total defense (310.5), the lowest output by a Cyclone team since 1984. The Cyclones also led the league and ranked 11th nationally in passing defense (187.8).
  • Three Cyclone safeties earned All-Big 12 recognition in 2021 in Isheem Young (second team), Greg Eisworth II (honorable mention) and Freyler (honorable mention).
  • From 2017-19, Broomfield mentored the cornerbacks at Indiana State. Rondale Green was an All-MVC performer and Kaelub Newman ranked second in the MVFC and ninth nationally in forced fumbles (3) under his watch.
  • He was the cornerbacks coach at Western Illinois in 2016 and the safeties coach at Carthage College (Wis.) in 2015.

PLAYING CAREER

  • Broomfield was a standout defensive back for the Cyclones from 2010-13, tallying 133 tackles, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 16 pass breakups and three interceptions in his career.
  • He spent the 2014 season as a member of the Buffalo Bills practice squad.

PERSONAL

  • A native of Palm Bay, Florida, Broomfield earned his degree in liberal studies with an emphasis in family and child services from Iowa State in 2013.
