Mia Nonnenberg enters her second season with Penn State swimming & diving as an assistant coach and works primarily with the long stroke and IM squads, as well with the freestyle group alongside assistant head coach Dan Carrington.
The 2022-23 season marked a standout year for the mid-distance and distance freestyle squads. Eduardo Cisternas and Catherine Meisner climbed the record books in multiple events, earning B1G Freshman of the Week honors. Cisternas set a new Nittany Lion record in the 1000 (8:56.63) while becoming the third-fastest swimmer ever in the 1650 (15:07.14) and 500 (4:18.50) and the seventh-quickest in the 200 (1:36.23). Meisner claimed the fourth-fastest 200 (1:45.95) and the ninth-quickest 100 (49.68) times in program history. Both athletes continued to excel during the 2023 post-season, advancing to finals at the Big Ten Championships. Nonnenberg also coached Sam Folger (fourth, 1:45.95) and Erik Bolang (eighth, 1:46.49) to all-time record finishes in the 200 Fly. Jack Harvey climbed to seventh fastest in all-time for the 200 Back at 1:45.01.
Joining the staff in September 2021, her close work with distance freestylers helped the Nittany Lions to finals appearances and top-24 finishes at the women's B1G Championships in Wisconsin and the men's championship in Indiana. Notably, freshman Euduardo Moraes lead Penn State in the 1650 and 500, earning a program top-10 time in the process (1650 - 15:20.87). After his freshman year work with Nonnenberg, Moraes now holds Penn State's third and tenth fastest times in the 500 (4:17.73) and 1650 (15:20.87). On the women's squad, Nonnenberg helped coach the Nittany Lions to 1 school record, 10 new program top-10 performances, 26 top-24 finishes and nearly 400 points at the B1G Championships.
Nonnenberg came to Happy Valley after spending the 2021 season as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University. During her time at Eastern Michigan, Nonnenberg helped to develop training plans, helped with recruiting and coordinated all team travel.
From 2019-21, she served as a graduate assistant at the University of West Florida, helping the women's team to back-to-back New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference titles in 2020 and 2021.
During 2020-21, Nonnenberg also was a team manager of the Toronto Titans of the International Swim League (ISL), where she assisted with team operations for an organization that included professional and Olympic athletes from over 20 countries.
Nonnenberg is a graduate of the University of Alabama where she was a two-time team captain. She was an NCAA All-American, four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll student, and 2016 Olympic Trial qualifier and top-20 finisher in 400 IM and 200 Butterfly. As well, she is the former team record holder in the 400IM, 200IM, 500 Free and 1650 Free. She graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.
After graduation, Nonnenberg was a volunteer assistant coach for Alabama.
Nonnenberg earned a Master of Science in Physical Education and Human Performance from West Florida.
