Former Atlantic Coast Conference standout Alex Anghelescu joined the Penn State Women's Tennis family as an assistant coach in June 2018. Anghelescu comes to Happy Valley after both playing and coaching at two ACC schools.
Anghelescu most recently served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Carolina. This past season, the Tar Heels won the ITA National Indoor Championships, the 2018 ACC Tournament, were ranked No. 1 in the nation for 10 straight weeks, finished the season with five All-Americans, had five players take part in the NCAA Individual Championships and had a doubles squad advance to the NCAA semifinals.
Prior to joining the Tar Heels staff, Anghelescu served as a certified Tennis Professional working with junior players of all levels at Life Time Fitness in Alpharetta, Ga., and was 2018 USTA National Spring Team Championships Coach as well. She also worked with the USTA Southern Section High Performance Camp as a Selected Coach.
"I am very excited to add Alex to our coaching staff," said Cagle. "Her knowledge of the game, passion for coaching and playing background will help us develop our student athletes and program overall. I know she is excited to get to work with our team and I look forward to working together with her to take our program to new levels."
Anghelescu spent her collegiate playing days at both Georgia and Georgia Tech. She achieved an ITA top ten ranking in doubles while at Georgia Tech, helping the team to a consistent top 15 national ranking and a national round of 16 appearances at both the ITA National Indoor Championships and the NCAA Championships. Anghelescu also reached the round of 16 as an individual in the NCAA Championships. She reached a career high of No. 935 on the WTA Tour as a professional in singles action and a No. 957 ranking as a pro on the WTA Tour in doubles. Her top win in juniors was a victory over U.S. Open Champion Sloane Stephens.
