UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's gymnastics team finished the 2006-2007 academic year ranked 24th in the country in team grade point average, the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) announced. Individually, eight Nittany Lion gymnasts earned scholar athlete honors for their performance in the classroom.
Penn State's finish is the second-highest among Big Ten schools behind Michigan State. One of only two league institutions among the top 25, the Nittany Lions boasted a team GPA of 3.33. Southeast Missouri State earned the team crown with a GPA of 3.74.
Eight of Penn State's gymnasts were recognized as scholar athletes by the NACGC/W, marking the second-highest individual team total in the conference. Corissa Pirkl (West Islip, N.Y./marketing) and Stephanie Sullivan (Gaithersburg, Md./science) boasted the highest individual grade point averages for the Nittany Lions, both recording a perfect 4.00, two of 103 women's gymnasts in the nation to do so.
Also for Penn State, Lindsay Borkan (Long Grove, Ill.) earned a 3.80 in communication arts and sciences, Ashley Mehrer (Midlothian, Va.) notched a 3.77 in actuarial science, Amie Olaes (Inverness, Ill.) posted a 3.50 in public relations, Brandi Personett (Katy, Texas) recorded a 3.38 in business management, Aslynn Satterfield (Boalsburg, Pa.) tallied a 3.46 in recreation, parks and tourism management and Genavieve Shingle (Langhorne, Pa.) earned a 3.58 in advertising/public relations and theatre.
