PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Penn State men's swimming & diving team split its tri-meet at Trees Pool, defeating Maryland, 236-168, and falling to Pittsburgh, 197-156, in the two-day meet.
The star of Saturday's events was Jon Cochrane (Boalsburg, Pa.) who captured two individual wins (200 free and 500 free) and a second-place showing in the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:01.26). In the 200 free, Cochrane swam a time of 1:40.23 for the victory, and he followed that up with a 4:33.96 showing in the 500 free for the double.
Other winners on Saturday were Dan Fimbianti (Mahwah, N.J./200 back), Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa./200 breast), Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis./200 butterfly). Scherer and Fimbianti teamed up with Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) and Basil Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) to take the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:20.80.
Fimbianti won the 200 back in a time of 1:49.64, while Scherer garnered in the 200 breast with a showing of 2:07.10. Bushman's 1:50.58 was good enough for the 200 butterfly victory.
The Nittany Lion men stay even at 3-3 in dual meets this season. Next week they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a quad-meet of Big Ten foes, including Ohio State, Northwestern and Michigan. The two-day meet begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and will conclude on Saturday, with diving events beginning at 11 a.m.
