Nittany Lion Tennis Tallies Double-Digit Wins on Day One of the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team kicked off the 2010 fall season with a total of 10 victories in day one of the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational on Friday. Two doubles pairings and six players in singles advanced in their flights. Action will continue tomorrow at the Lenz Tennis Center.

In doubles action, the Nittany Lions earned a total of four victories. In Flight "A", sophomore Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) and junior Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) moved to the third round as they picked up two victories. In the first round, Lee and Bourchier knocked-off Cornell's Evan Bernstein and Mirza Klis, 8-4. From there, they advanced to the second round and defeated Marc Powers and Daniel Hoffman of Yale, 8-5. Lee and Bourchier will play Columbia's Kevin Kung and Nathaniel Gery tomorrow.

Also in the Flight "A" doubles bracket, sophomore C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.) and junior Chris Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) were defeated by Princeton's Matjia Pecotic and Matt Siow, 8-3. Rounding out the bracket, Matt Spindler and Augie Bloom of Princeton defeated sophomore Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) and freshman Russell Bader (Austin, Texas), 9-7.

In Flight "B" doubles, junior Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Guanhua Chen (DaLian, China) advanced to the third round with two victories. The pairing defeated Princeton's Michael Lin and Dan Richardson, 8-6, followed by an 8-6 win over Zach Gorn and Dmitry Bury of Penn.

The Nittany Lions tallied a total of six wins in singles action. In Flight "A", Bourchier defeated Ibrahim Shams Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-3, 6-3, and will face Pecotic tomorrow. Additionally in Flight "A", Lee defeated Haig Schneiderman of Columbia, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Lee will face Powers in the second round. Welnetz earned another victory as he defeated Ivan Turudic of Penn, 6-3, 6-2, and will face Buffalo's Wotjek Starackiewicz on Saturday.

Flight "B" was the strong bracket for the Nittany Lions as Cohen and Bader earned victories. Cohen defeated Columbia's Tizian Bucher, 6-1, 6-1. Bader downed Mike Lampa of St. John's, 6-2, 6-2. Cohen is set to play Ruben Devos of Binghamton tomorrow, while Bader will play Kevin Kung of Columbia.

Griffin and Hayn each faced tough losses in Flight "C" and Flight "D" respectively. Chen earned a nice win over Mark Hemy of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the next round.

Following competition at Princeton, Penn State will return the following week to the USTA Invitational at Flushing Meadows, N.Y., home of the U.S. Open, from Sept. 24-26.
