The Garret Open came to a close today with the Penn State men's fencing team taking first in the epee, foil and saber contests. After strong performances from the women's team yesterday the men came out in full force today to wrap up the tournament.
Freshman Anthony Green had an outstanding performance in the men's epee competition. Pitted against Mike Raynis in the final round Green went on to defeat the Harvard freshman, who ranked first in American Junior Epee in 2010. In his first year of collegiate action Green has shown great promise and will be a valuable asset to the Nittany Lions as the season progresses.
The men's foil was the most successful for the team who had three members place in the top five. Sophomore David Willette beat Princeton's Alex Mills to earn himself the top spot. The sophomore recently made fencing history when he was named the Junior World Cup Points Winner for the 2009-2010 season, for the Junior men's foil. Willette is the first American fencer to earn the honor. Teammates Michael El-Saleh and Jeremy Goldstein finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Captain Aleksander Ochocki took first in the men's saber after defeating Harvard's Evan Prochniak. The 2010 All-American has been a part of the team's success for the past two years and is looking to help lead the team to another NCAA championship.
Next weekend members of the team will compete in the North American Cup tournament. The competition spans four days, Nov. 19-22 starting at 8 a.m each day.
