Nittany Lion Fencers Open Season With PS Lion/Junior Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State fencers were back in action this weekend hosting the Penn State Lion/ Junior Open. The competition offered both teams the chance to bout against fellow team members, offering a glimpse of the competitive season to come.

In the Penn State Lion Open portion of the weekend freshman David Gomez Tanamachi walked away with a first place finish in the men's foil. Teammates Rylan Delap and Jeremy Goldstein tied for third. Another freshman, Alina Antokhina, finished in the top spot in the women's foil. Sophomore Kylei McGill took second while Olga Ostatnigrosh and Kane Gladnick tied for third.

2011 National runner up Margherita Guzzi- Vincenti took first in mixed portion of the Lion Open. In the men's competition Anthony Green went on to take second followed by Oliver Valdes and Farzaan Karimi who tied for third. For the women, Anne Stephenson took second and the top-three was completed by Julia Higson and Aubrey Rafinski, who tied.

Senior Aleksander Ochocki earned the top spot in the men's saber competition. Adrian Bak finished in second followed by Alex Schneller and Garrett Buell who tied for third. In the women's portion of the competition Nicole Glon took home a first place finish. Jessica Russo walked away with second with Elizabeth Rapp and Olivia Benedek tying for third.

In the Junior portion of the Open Pawel Puchalski placed first in the men's saber. Gordon Long, of the DC Fencers Club, came in second followed by Alex Schneller and Sean Moran who tied for third. The women's saber only featured two competitors, Elizabeth Rapp and Nicole Glon. The two placed first and second, respectively.

In the mixed foil event Rylan Delap led the competition with a first place finish. Jeremy Goldstein came in second followed by Adam Elkassas and Alina Antokhina who tied for third. The epee competition which was also mixed, was led by Maxwell Kleeman. Jeffrey Miller came in second and the tie for third was held by Michael Shaw and Karimi Farzaan.

Next up the Nittany Lions will travel to Philadelphia, on Sunday Nov. 6 to compete in the Temple Open. Action begins at 8 a.m. ET
