WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Penn State men's tennis team finished the Wake Forest Invite on Sunday as doubles team Matt Barry and Roman Trkulja won their doubles draw title. Penn State finished the tournament with nine doubles wins and 21 singles wins. Seven Nittany Lions won at least two singles matches this weekend.
Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) and Trkulja (Toronto, Canada) advanced to the B Doubles Draw final after three straight wins leading up to Sunday. In the final, they matched up against UNC Wilmington's Zach Hublitz and Christian Van der Burgh. The Penn State duo clinched the draw title with an 8-6 victory.
Freshman Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain) and junior Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) earned third place in the C Doubles Draw. The pair competed in the third place match against Furman's Jacob Behal and Juan Sheppard, knocking them off 8-2. Castells and Hanzlik finished the weekend with a 3-1 mark.
Freshmen Alex Fennell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) and Christian Lutshaunig (Richboro, Pa.) took on Liberty's Dillon Segur and Stan Vaughn in the B Doubles Draw fifth place match, but fell 8-6. Fennell and Lutschaunig earned a pair of wins this weekend.
Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) and Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) played an A Doubles Draw consolation match on Sunday against Stetson's Chester Espie and Simon Julin, but dropped a tough 8-7(5) battle.
Castells also competed in his B1 Singles Draw final on Sunday. The freshman took on the top seed in the bracket, Wake Forest's Sam Bloom. Castells won the opening set 6-0, but Bloom came back with a 7-5 win in the second set. Bloom took the third set, 6-3, to win the match and draw title. Castells finished the weekend with a 3-1 record.
Roman Trkulja earned third place in the B2 Single Draw by beating Norfolk State's Daniel Grauel, 6-1, 6-0. Trkulja also went 3-1 this weekend.
Christian Lutschaunig was set to compete in the C1 Singles Draw, but won in a walkover by Stetson's Egor Panyushkin. The freshman went 3-1 this weekend to improve his fall record to 4-1.
Michael Reilly won three straight matches to end the weekend, including the B2 Singles Draw consolation final. Reilly took on Wake Forest's Nicky Kunz in the final. A close match saw Reilly winning the first set 7-5, before Kunz won a 7-5 set of his own. In the third set tiebreaker, Reilly came out on top 12-10.
Sophomore Matt Barry and Freshman Alex Fennell also won their respective draw fifth place matches. In the B1 Singles Draw, Barry knocked off Wake Forest's Nicholas Osterling, 6-2, 6-1. Barry completed a 3-1 weekend. Fennell matched up against N.C. State's Thomas Weigel in the A2 Singles Draw. Fennell dropped the first set 6-0, but came back with a 6-2 win in the second set. Fennell bested Weigel in the tiebreaker set, 10-7. Fennell is another Nittany Lion that went 3-1 on the weekend.
In the A1 Singles Draw, Russell Bader faced Wake Forest's Aws Larribi in the fifth place match, but fell 6-2, 6-3. Bader won two matches at the invite.
Tomas Hanzlik competed in an A2 Singles Draw consolation match, dropping a 6-0, 6-1 result to Iowa's Jonas Dierckx. Hanzlik got a win on Friday in the consolation quarterfinal.
Penn State travels to the ITA Atlantic Regionals, starting Thursday in Blacksburg, Va.
