WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Penn State men's tennis team earned four singles wins and four doubles wins on day two at the Wake Forest Invite. Matt Barry and Roman Trkulja advanced to their doubles draw final, while freshman Marc Collado Castells moved onto his singles draw final.
Castells (Barcelona, Spain) had a big day in singles, advancing to the B1 Draw final after knocking off Furman's Alex Christ, 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3. In the draw final on Sunday, he takes on Wake Forest's Sam Bloom, the top seed in the draw.
In the B Doubles Draw, Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) and Trkulja (Toronto, Canada) began the day with an 8-4 win over Iowa's Dom Patrick and Juan Estenssoro. They claimed a spot in the semifinal, where they knocked off Wake Forest's Nolan Bauer and Nicky Kunz, 8-2. On Sunday, the duo take on UNC Wilmington's Zach Hublitz and Christian Van der Burgh in the draw final.
The UNC Wilmington pair got there after Alex Fennell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) and Christian Lutschaunig (Richboro, Pa.) fell 8-7(1) to them in the draw quarterfinal. Fennell and Lutschaunig bounced back with an 8-7(8) victory in the fifth place bracket against East Carolina's Frederic Lehfeldt and Patrick Wolterbeek. They face Liberty's Dillon Segur and Stan Vaughn on Sunday in the fifth place final.
Castells and Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) knocked off East Carolina's Ross Nigro and Damien Brenard, 8-7(0) in the C Doubles Draw quarterfinal. In the semifinal, the Penn State duo fell 8-3 against Elon's Juan Madrid and Chris Humphreys. They move on to the third place match on Sunday against Furman's Juan Sheppard and Jacob Behal.
Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) and Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) competed in the A Doubles Draw consolation quarterfinal against NC State's Ian Dempster and Thomas Weigel, but fell in a tough 8-7(5) battle. They next matched up against Wake Forest's Anthony Delcore and Pedro Dumont, but dropped an 8-6 match.
Sophomore Roman Trkulja also competed in his draw semifinal in the B2 Draw. UNC Wilmington's Santtu Leskinnen won the first set 7-5, but Trkulja came back with a 6-4 win in the second set. Leskinnen won the third set 6-1.
Freshman Christian Lustchaunig matched up against Furman's Juan Sheppard in the C1 Draw semifinal. Lutschaunig fell 6-1, 6-3. He matches up against Stetson's Egor Panyushkin in the third place match on Sunday.
Russell Bader and Matt Barry each won fifth place bracket matchups on Saturday. Bader won an A1 Draw match over Liberty's Shea Thomas, 7-6(1), 6-0. Barry defeated Wake Forest's Nolan Bauer, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the B1 Draw. Both move on to their fifth place bracket finals on Sunday.
Michael Reilly picked up a win in a B2 Draw consolation semifinal, knocking off Norfolk State's Daniel Grauel, 6-2, 6-2. Reilly faces Wake Forest's Nicky Kunz in the consolation final.
Tomas Hanzlik competed in the consolation semifinal in the A2 Draw, but fell 6-0, 6-2 against Iowa's Juan Estenssoro. In Sunday's consolation third place match, Hanzlik takes on Iowa's Jonas Dierckx.
