Warren Takes Rings Title at West Point Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Penn State men's gymnast Nate Warren won the individual event title in the rings on Saturday evening at the Army's Christl Arena. The graduate student received a 14.000 on the apparatus to earn his first individual event victory of his career.

The Nittany Lions had at least one gymnast place in the top-six in every event.

"To go to finals on the second day we want to make sure we safeguard their health, but we have a scrappy group," said head coach Randy Jepson. "I am really pleased for Michael Artlip, he fought well and competed really hard this weekend. Nate placed on top for stills for both days. It shows the maturity of his time with the program is really starting to show through and that rings true for both days."

Artlip won the all-around title on Friday. The Bellaire, Texas native finished sixth on the pommel horse (12.200), fifth on the parallel bars (12.900) and fourth on high bar (12.700) Saturday evening.

Kacper Garnczarek stuck the landing to earn the high bar runner-up title with a score of 12.850. The sophomore also placed third on floor with a score 13.150.

Sophomore Matt Underhill earned a 13.700 with a stick to be the rings runner-up. Underhill took sixth on vault with a score of 12.800.

Luke Esparo placed fourth on rings 13.250 and fifth on floor 12.850. Fellow freshman Landon Simpson placed fifth on vault 13.100.

The Nittany Lions will compete at the Navy Open Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m.
